i am thinking the lighter smaller pony-type cars:

Maverick, Pinto, Gremlin, Chevette, Pacer, or perhaps the very early (late 70's?) Celica's and the like, for the japanese-car-that-wants-to-be-a-musclecar look.

Then add massive box flares to any of the above for that oh so yummy IMSA look

How about something REALLY off the wall like a Fuego

Hmmmm, locost? Use the mechanicals you have. Forget about the V8, and you'll end up faster than a v8 anyway with the light weight, and the bonus is that you'll be able to hook up coming out of turns better than practically anything! Is the front diff integral to the oilpan, or can it be parted?

Although a Fuego/Gordini does sound nice in a warped sort of way.

I'm guessing you could get $500 for a running 440. And this one made my weiner move:

Keep the Audi motor, turbo it to a billion pounds of boost, and drop it into a sleeper body like a Taurus, Volvo 240, or Camry.

Oh god.... A Camry AllTrac. Some of the work would be done for you already in terms of where to place everything.

Even better? Make sure it's a wagon. I could only imagine that unreal 5-cylinder wail coming forth upon my ears, to have my eyes assailed with the site of... a CAMRY?
