I stumbled across "Speed Capital/Bonneville" on Discovery Channel today. It is such a cool event, and you just don't get to see all of those cool cars anywhere. Why doesn't anyone go out there and take a photo of each car entered and post it on a website??? Anyway, it is really Grassroots. Even teams with big budgets are still kinda winging it and figuring it out as they go along. There is no such thing as a "factory" land speed car, you may get a big sponsor, but you still have to design and built it yourself. Troy Terpanian built a great streamliner pushing for 300mph. (I love his work).

Every gear head should experience Bonneville at least once in their lives. It is really one of the last true havens for the grassroots guys. Very few high budget teams, and a totally open pit where you can pretty much walk up to anybody and strike up a conversation.
Just don't forget your sunscreen.

If you hear or see it coming on again please post.
There were about 10 Grassroots Challenge related people at Maxton last April. A few participants frequent this site. Maxton holds Hot Rod's Top Speed Challenge. We plan to be there with a grassroots built Studebaker. We hope to go to B-ville within 4 years. Anyhow, anyone interested in getting together there (or helping out here) just drop a line to me.

Our 2007, then 2008, now 2010+ Challenge car. Most fun event (after the Challenge of coarse) that we have been to.

I've been there 5 times for speed week. Totally awesome event.
And the hot biker chicks??? Holy cow. The blond featured in the show above isn't the only one out there. That makes it so much more worth it.
It's also a scary place, too. We watched our driver spin the Alfa at 190mph. Can be some incredibly nasty accidents out there...

I'm seriously thinking of making the pilgrimage next year. The show was very interesting, although I should have taped it, 'cause the advert to content ratio sucked.

I tried looking up Maxton a week or so ago. Anyone have a website for it?

Companies have sponsored LSR cars sure, but nothing like a track ready Porsche or Ferrari. I can buy a turn-key race car from the factory, but not an LSR car. Someone, somewhere has to build those suckers from scratch.

Maxton is the location. The East Coast Timing Association is the organization that runs the races.
Since Andrew posted a picture of his car and crew, here's a link to mine

I'm the guy in the red hat and Mopar shirt. That's our Intrepid we ran in '07. All the old iron was broken so we loaded the bags in the daily driver and headed down. I'm looking forward to running something a little faster next time we go.

What is the land-speed record for a Miata anyway?

We have a customer who's done a certified 130 at Bonneville. Obviously have been faster ones, but he's the only one with a time slip from the salt that I know of.

Hiring Troy to build you a car can't be cheap.
