Both i versions of the 325 have the same engine, just different numbers of doors. It's the e version you have to watch out for.

The 325i coupe is almost exactly the same as a 325is. Performance wise all it might lack is an LSD (it was an option on the 'i' standard on 'is')

I'd like to build up an '87 924S some day. All the light weight goodness of the 924, with a 944 motor in it.

Have you given any thought to a Toyota Echo?

Alright, next one... Mk2 Golf GTi?

How do they handle? 1.8t drop in? Is it cheap fun like a SE-R is cheap fun?

hey if it was good enough for Ayrton Senna and CCC to go rallying in, it can't be that bad. Myself, personally I have gotten over my hatred for the car because of it's '90's ubiquity. It's simply iconic. Now that I'm older iconoclasm is a little less febrile for me.

Some more unusual possibilities that came to mind:

Ford Probe / Mazda MX-6 / Mazda 626, either with the DOHC V6 or turbo four banger. I sometimes miss the first gen Probe GT I entered in the $2004 Challenge. With other Ford/Mazda hybrids, there's the Escort GT.

H22 in an Accord - one of the few cases where a Honda swap makes sense but seldom gets tried.

    Merkur XR4Ti.

can't be bothered to cut down this quote - too farkin' lazy, plus I screwed one up last time I tried. the H22 in an Accord idea fits real well with this link however. http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/200x-classifieds/1996-honda-accord-ex-500/8... And the Merkur. I don't like Fords, and really never got the XR4Ti, but it's as close in looks to a Cossie as you'll get - gotta be black, white, or red and immaculate for me to bite, but for that I would.

What about a honda CRX? they weigh at most 1/2 of a p71, they have tons of aftermarket support, and I have seen them go like stink at a couple of autoXs...

I think an adapter plate that attaches a turbo rotary engine to a FWD transmission would be a fun project. Add a mild port and a big turbo and install in a MK1 MR2 or Fiero (or similar Mid engine mongrel) and make silly *EXPLODERATION* noises.

    Fixed

LOL just kidding...That sounds fun, but wouldnt all that rev cause a FWD to push pretty bad? just my .02

The engine would be in the back of a MR2 or Fiero...

    And not FWD, either...

I've pretty much narrowed it down to a 4 door 91-94 B13 sentra with a SR20 swap. Either SR20VE for road racing or SR20DET for complete hooliganism.

I love those Sentras, but I've already done one before.

Here's another thought. I have a mint condition 94 Geo Prizm LSi (1.8L 7a-fe) sitting at home. The only thing I don't like about it is the rear drums. Is there some fun to be had with that?
