I really hate to even be asking this, but my adventures in trying to rebuild/tune old carbs have been utter failures.

I own a Holley 570 CFM Street Avenger I bought new in 2003, and has only been used on a few engines during testing and only seen a few street miles. I paid between 250-300 for it on ebay (could probably find the original email receipt if need be).

Since this is now an 8 year old carb (though still in very nice shape), and it was effectively something I have laying around, is it in the spirit of the rules to FMV it, or should I value it at what I paid for it originally? And if its ethical to FMV it, about what would you consider it worth?

I'm in a serious challenge budget crunch at this point, or I wouldn't be asking this. I think the only FMVing I did in the past was on stuff that was given to me. Heck, I'm considering buying a remanned 750cfm Edelbrock for $200 just to add a little leeway in my budget.

I'd still like anyone's input if possible, but have hopefully solved the problem. Just bought a remanned 4160 from Holley's Ebay store for about $175. Hopefully it arrives soon, and works fine.

It's not "new", even if it does have some years of non use on it, so I would say it's FMV. Now if you had a brand new carb still in box, I would still FMV it, but I would be budgeting much closer to current market value or the old purchased price then say a swap meet carb needing a rebuild.

parts you already own are budgeted at FMV. google "holley street avenger 570 site:craigslist.org" and get some representative values upon which you may base your FMV.

Okay, of course, the carb I got via ebay decided it was actually a fountain - spewed fuel from the secondary vent tube, and didn't have an external float adjustment. So it'll go back for repair, but time is now of the essence, so it looks like my 570 is going on for this year.

From a craigslist search, here's what I found:

Holley 570 Street Avenger Carburetor, barely used. $200

$120 for a more used one:

Some 670 versions of the same carb

The first one looks like its the closest in shape to mine, so do you think $200 would be an acceptable number to go with, assuming I include a copy of the craigslist ad in my entry paperwork?

i think no challenger ever would have a problem with you booking 10% of your budget to a carburetor. honestly, anything $100 or greater is probably fair.
