after several attempts to clean the rust out of my fuel tank..it appears I have a mouse hotel inside and with the baffles ,I am not able to clear out the nest.
A really quick fix would be to use a Coast Guard approved 3 gallon plastic marine tank securely strapped in the car, Would this be allowed or am I just screwed. Thanks...need to be on road by 2PM tomorrow.
I've used a 5 gallon Jerry Jug (Nissan 343) and this year it's a 5 gallon dump can. It has to be strapped in, and if it's in the trunk and the trunk is open air connected to the drivers compartment then you need a metal barrier/box. Keep in mind that marine plastic tanks don't have baffeling, so a fast corner could suck air, that's why I went with a tall 5 gallon dump jug... Good luck! Don't let this stop you!!!
And I'll second the trunk thing. The inspectors had a long look at my water tank, thinking it was a fuel tank- in the back seat area.
If you can swing the fabrication- use metal straps.

doesnt' take much material strength to hold a small fuel cell in place. look at how thin the old GM tank straps were -- my '72 Monte had an 18-gal tank IIRC and it was held in place by two steel straps that couldn't have been heavier than 20-ga. in fact, go look under whatever cars are in your driveway for inspiration.
