One of my coworkers is thinking of getting an Aveo, and asked what I knew about them. I know nothing, and was wondering if any of you had good or bad things to say about them.
She's looking for basic transportation, and doesn't mind driving a 5-speed.
I think there was a recent very derogatory thread saying they were Daewoos and had beau coup probs.

There's a version of the Cobalt that actually pulls better highway mileage per EPA ratings. I would so much rather have a Yaris than an Aveo. Or an SX4. Or herpes. Seriously, herpes or Aveo, I'd be taking the herpes. They've got pills to keep that under control these days.
I wouldn't mind one...but then again, I drive a Ford Aspire with a busted out hatch window....don't get much worse.

Out of all the rental cars I've driven, they (Aveos) are the only one I'll request to NOT get at the counter...
I would get pretty much any new compact car before an Aveo

Didnt someone here say they have timing chain troubles? (like as in the chain needs replacing every 60k miles or so or it will break).
She's crazy for even thinking of buying a new one. I suppose a really cheap used one might not be as bad of a deal, but from what I've seen the depreciation on the Aveo hasn't been much more than other small cars.
I'd second the Cobalt. If you can find a pretty stripped one, it'll be priced similar. If she's concerned about long-term & total-cost of ownership, check into a Yaris or Fit.
The used car that I am recommending these days are 2006 Ford Fusions (Mercury Milan) 4 cyls with manual transmissions.
A huge influx of former rental cars is really driving down their prices fast. If you choose a manual trans it will assure that the car was not in rental service but it is still affected by the price reduction.
If you search sites like autotrader you will find that you can get a 4 cyl (2.3L same as Mazda 3) with less than 40k miles for just under $10k. You can not even buy a Mazda 3 for this price. The cars seem to be well put together and even the most basic version will have more equipment and comfort of an Aveo. You will also get the same mpg as the Aveo in a much more respectable looking package.
Some Ford Dealers will even sell them as Certified if warranty is important.

If the buyer has to have new, search Ford lots for current Fusions. They are in model switch over right now to an updated exterior and my be dealing on old versions.
No no no. My g/f has one and they are absolutely horrific. Uncomfortable, lots of plastics, sound system sucks, engine and tranny love to make unusual noises, timing chain MUST be done before 60k or you'll be shart out of luck. I'm currently trying to get rid of my girlfriends before it rolls over to 60...is that bad?

To clarify, DirtyBird thinks the Aveo is horiffic, not the Fusion which I wrote about above his post.
yup, they suck (Aveos). I want her to take over payments on the Fit still so I can get something with more power.

Not necessarily all bad.
There's about a dozen other cars I'd consider before the Chevaroo. They were terrbile at best and only got worse.
My suggestions in that category are: Accent Rio5 Spectra Cobalt SX4 Sport
That Daewoo stink is hard to wash off. My mother has one and it has issues that would make a Yugo blush.
I would echo jrw on the Fusion. I had a four banger automatic as a company car for roughly a year and I loved it. It handled surprisingly well for a stock sedan netted me roughly 30 mpg on the highway.
If I could have gotten a manual transmission I would have. I am watching their prices fall but am still to cheap to get one.
I actually don't mind the aveo. My Mom has a Pontiac Wave and it's a decent little car. They got theirs bare bones but with a cd player and fog lights for 8 grand canadian with 400km. It's no amazing drive but it's light feeling and good to drive. My fiance really liked driving it this weekend when she was learning to drive standard. She found it really easy and maneuverable to drive. I agree with the article, it may not be as good as it's $15,000 competitors but for the right price it's a great car. We once loaded a ridiculous amount of bedroom and living room Ikea furnature in it and still drove with 3 people. As a cheap basic car I think it does a good job. They've put on like 16,000 km and no problems.
Up there in Canadia it's the wave, down here it's a g-unit...the G3

Then when you get one all you do is complain. It's a cheap car, roughly the same price point as the Ford Festiva and the Toyota Tercel before that. It's going to be cheap. That's what it's for. Do the basic maintenance on it, and on that car it includes the timing belt, and it's decent basic transportation that beats walking.
