OK, so go to your local Craigslist and do a search for cars+trucks, max price $2010, must have image. From the first page of results, post your pick for a 2010 Challenge car.
I have an interesting Ford Maverick with a 302, a '94 Civic with a B18, and an IROC w/o a motor, but I would stay with mid-engine and go with:
$1600, V-6, money left to do a 5-speed conversion and nitrous.

63 lifted VW baja with a bus transaxle and a Ford V6 for $1950.
Recoup some for the baja wheels/tires and shocks. Slam it and flip the motor/transaxle around to be mid-engined.

$1950 6cyl coupe, 5 spd proper gearbox, new tires...Id sell the CD player, rear interior, tires and the new AC system and add some stickier tires, better brake pads and add a ton of lightness!
