Is there any difference between the camshafts for different D-series engines i.e. will an aftermarket cam for one D-series fit into a different D-series?

They can be as different as camshaft can possibly be. Absolutely incompatible between types of engines.

The differences are really interesting and can lead one on a edifying research journey into how piston engines work.

This is something I think I actually know. 1.6 cams can be used in 1.5's with the addition of an adjustable cam gear. The early D16A6 cams are hotter cams than later non vtec D16's. Vtec and non vtec cams will obviously not interchange.
