There goes another night on YouTube.
I'd love to do a Baja race in a prerunner style truck.

I've done racing in sand dunes with slow trucks. Nothing quite close to 1000 miles.

Have an Uncle who raced in the Baja 1000 and 500 in the SCORE Class 1, I think (or it's equivalent from a few years ago?). He was in a couple shots of "Dust to Glory". I'd recommend that documentary to anyone interested in the Baja races.

When I become independently wealthy, the first thing I am going to do is build and campaign a class 11 bug-gy.

It doesn't seem like you would have to particularly wealthy since they are pretty much stock VW Bugs.

No, he is right, a Class 11 is stock engine, stock suspension VW Bug. What you showed is class 5/1600...its a bit more hard core.
I say independently wealthy because I would need to take off a whole week from work and pay a crew to travel with me. I would try to do it as inexpensive as possible, but it still adds up.

I was thinking of trying to get a group of friends to do it. I figured the travel expense would be the biggest thing.

I did three weekends of dune racing for less than $1000, including the price of my truck.
The only classes there were 2WD and 4WD. My little, crashed, RWD Dakota helped me take three podiums in three weekends.

One of my favorite business trips was to work on a trophy truck- they had installed a new 5.4 4v engine and needed some cal work. Those trucks are truly amazing in what they can do!!
IIRC, most of the teams are based in so cal if you want to work for them.

Put me down for your co-driver. I will be there with bells on!

I think the guy i have building the suspension for the Escort did/does this stuff, and i think he still builds and sets up trucks for it.

He works on Ferraris (set up a 430 for the 24 hours @ Daytona), Porsches, Baja trucks, and yet found the time to build suspension arms, tie braces, and a harness bar for my little Escort.
