After 5+ years of being trapped in an appliance, I finally have a project / racing car that I can play with again (more on the car here: https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/build-projects-and-project-cars/2003-mini-cooper-s-r53-street-touring-prepared-build/145066/page1/).  I have a laundry list of things I want to do to the car.  One of them, I'm hoping to get some help from people smarter than me here and on the wider internet.  This is a poll to see if anyone would sign up to help, and what sweet skills they would bring to the party.

The idea: Create a car management and tracking platform based on the Raspberry Pi

The details:

The Raspberry Pi platform is GRM price and ideology friendly.  It's designed to be cheap and be something to learn and modify.  The goal would be to take the base platform and some already existing hardware and software components and package them into a grassroots car management platform.  Some features and functionality that I have in mind:

  • Touchscreen interface
  • Automated startup at power on
  • ODB2 Connection via Bluetooth
  • GPS tracking
  • Optional Video camera
  • Optional Media server

This isn't something that has never been done, what I'm talking about is packing it as well as we can, making it pretty, and seamlessly integrating into the standard functions of the car.

We would co-develop and build the units.  Each helping each other along the way and maintain a repository for any code changes that we make or develop.
