I didn't ask that question but I think the answer is pretty awesome.

Well, if it isn't Miata, then might as well make it interesting!

So if a 323GTX and a Miata had a baby...

I said I should build an AWD Capri as a year-round Miata, but only to myself a few years ago.

GET OUT OF MY HEAD DAMMIT!

Hmmm, I'll take the Capri, the Neon, and the Impulse. Why isn't this guy on here?

    The answer is YES.

goes to Craigslist... looking for XR2... then 323, then a box of tissues.

^ What he said. Bonus points for the gravel work surface but minus points for only one car on blocks at one time.

^^ Looks like his house is up on blocks and there might be wheels under it somewhere. That should count for something.

    That's how we roll, Tony.

I love this idea by the way.

I need a four seat version.

I spoke with him extensively during his build. Apparently, the conversion wasn't a terribly complicated.

I suggested that he should join, though I don't believe he has. I just sent a message, so hopefully he'll chime in.

I think I mentioned this a couple weeks ago as an idea for what to do with a rusty GTX in a thread about GTX's.

It's really too bad we didn't get more of the AWD Mazda's in this country from that time period (like the AWD version of my old 626...) to enjoy and source parts from for stuff like this.

I wonder how stiff the Capri is.

I like the cutout idea, but the x-pipe seems unnecessary.

    In reply to skruffy:

    Now that just seems dumb.

Thanks for the link Kevin :)

This has been a dream of mine for some time...I was originally thinking RWD but AWD is just as good, its not FWD!

Spent a year or two collecting parts and ended up with this:

1991 Mercury Capri XR2, 196,xxx miles Ford Escort BP motor with jdm GTX goodies VJ20/ Tbird hybrid turbo, fmic, ect BF GTX AWD transmission & rearend

way too many details to list. Currently I'm sourcing a bit beefier tranny, and once it gets warmer I'll be doing a custom interior and who knows what else.

BTW I wanted the X-pipe as my exhaust tips too, I think it worked out alright.

Thanks for the props guys! -Matt / Rocketman

For the record, i do indeed think this is awesome beyond belief, and i would definitely drive one. I'm just a bit flabbergasted that i never made the connection that this could be done.

Insert mandatory joke about 4 hours and seeing a doctor.

Yeah, makes a lot of sense, really.

I'm interested to know how it drives.

Not really related, but the last time I was under my Elan, I did actually look "out of curiosity" to see if there was room for a driveshaft, pumpkin & axles back there. Luckily there isn't.

What would provide a stronger trans for this project? I'm not sure what would be available without going to a Hewland Group A GTX box or something similarly impossible to afford...
