My Samurai developed a problem last weekend where it starts normally, but for a second directly after firing up it makes a grinding noise like a really badly worn bearing. It does it every time I start. It started after an off-road outing where much crud was flung and the vehicle stalled probably around 8 times within 4 hours. Some research points to a problem with the starter clutch, which would mean I'd need a new starter. Any opinions?

Oh I like the new smileys by the way We're just missing the angry devil and the rolleyes now.

My high class Chevrolet Cadavalier has done that since I bought it at 27k miles. The dealer says that the problem is common, but would not replace it. I found through some research that this is due to chevy's tolerances (or lack thereof). I say drive it until it dies; mine has been grinding for the last 75k miles without any side effects.
