gotta love the use of the term "Eco" in any kind of association with a 5000-lb vehicle.....

    Mine weighs 6000, actually.

And yeah, it moves pretty good for what it is.

Just imagine when you turn up the volume to 9 from 6...

Did it miss a shift and bounce off the rev limiter? So cool when automatics can do that...

When people who have them report getting 24mpg without really trying... yeah, that's really, really good for a truck that's also useful as a truck, with a decent towing capacity and everything.

I caught that, big time. Kind of shocking, to me.

What we have heard is the same you have heard- that Roush-Yates was developing a motor for LMP work. More specifically, LMP2 rules that were implemented in 2011.

No talk at all about DP/ Grand Am.

Other than that, rumors that engines have been tested- but, honestly, no more than that.

Decent towing? It has the highest rating of Ford's gasoline engines. 11,300 lbs (maximum loaded trailer weight) Ford's website says that the 6.2 liter gas engine can tow that amount, too, though.

How long until these are reasonably priced swap motors?

IMHO, never. Swap, perhaps. Reasonable, well.... (But that goes for most engines installed in +2010 cars- since ECU's are so closely matched with vehicles).

Along with the Roush-Yates rumor, there has been rumors of EcoBoost crate motors, partially juiced by a few hot rods that were actually sponsored by Ford. But, AFAIK, nothing has happened.

I was wondering that too. I'm at 80k miles on my 3v 5.4 and will need new spark plugs soon. It might be less of a headache just to swap in the Ecoboost

I had to qualify it so someone wouldn't point out that their old B1600 would get 28mpg.

I wonder, how is that motor going to be in a few years at the 150K-200K mile range. That's Ford's work truck, isn't it all about going the distance?

Those problems are becoming lesser all the time.

I own a 4 month old truck, and my buddy can alter just about anything on the ECU.

  • Jan. 30, 2012 8:02 a.m. Knurled Dork

All we need is a CAN simulator, something to wake the computer up and feed it the signals it needs (vehicle speed and coolant temp from the instrument cluster, if that's how it goes, etc).

Screw MegaSquirt - I want MegaCAN.

Editing the computer won't do jack if the computer doesn't physically have the inputs it needs for some things and relies on the network bus(es) for the data. And most of them don't power up until the CAN tells them to.

While I'm not very happy that there are hackers out there, but the security parts are much deeper that most people realize. If you can turn it off, you then have to actually re-set it, which I'm not aware is possible outside of a specific tool. If you don't do that, it's not really off.

Also why are new F150s brakes so sucktastic? The rest of the truck drove ok.

Ignoring the part that it's against the law....

Engines are tuned is a specific way for a specific reason, if you think you can do "better"- I can gauruntee that you will break something else. And most of the times when someone hacks and breaks, they then turn the car back to the dealer and expect to fix it under warranty. Many of them also spout how bad the parts are on line, too- when they were the cause of the failure, not the OEM.

The goal is to make as much power as possible all the time, AND make the car last more than 150k miles (since that's the emissions requirements) for basic stuff, and far more than that for structural stuff.

    And?

If you want to hot rod, fine- sign the paper telling the world that you will not accept any warranty in any way for your modifications. And that you will not bitch about Honda when you grenade their S2000 motor when you screwed with the calibration.
