My co-worker's sorta-new-to-him 2000 E46 puked all of its diff lube onto the garage floor last night. He asked me why that might be. I told him I have no idea.

I'm betting he whacked something and cracked the rear cover. Or whoever changed the fluid last left the drain plug loose and it finally fell out. Nothing else I can think of that would cause such a problem.
