Have a line on a MB 300SE (W126) for small beer; needs engine rebuild. This has the I-6 with which I am not very familiar.

Is this worth messing with? Or should I look for a W126 with a reasonable powerplant?

Or I assume I could bolt in a V8 if I could find one.

Where are you at? The M103 engine are really a dime a dozen around the SF Bay. It isn't a bad engine I'd probably just find a good junkyard engine and be done with it. If you really want something special hold out for and m104 24V but I'd probably just find a stock engine and be done with it.

I'd say get it, I have a diesel 126 and it's a really nice car.

Get it. The 3.0 liter six with 177 hp is a little gutless in the S-class (hell, it only made 10 more horsepower than the I6 in the BMW 325i of the same time!), but the W126 body's such a fine car.

Moreover it doesn't have the timing chain issues of some of the earlier V8 engines that came in the W126.
