Man I totally understand your situation, but that is NOT a pretty car :)

Unfortunately there are not many, if any, attractive 30+MPG wagons out there. The Saturns come close. Maybe a diesel Passat, but they aren't in my price range.

You can make this thing attractive relatively easily and cheaply.
Start looking for EGT bumpers, LTS front lip, lower it, get some Tracer corners, EGT grill, red out the taillights, tint it, etc etc etc.
These can be very cool looking cars.

Tracer tails are also red, not amber. Was going to suggest the Tracer corners, especially being silver and all.
So, your manual Escort came with no tach, and my automatic Tracer had a tach. WTF?
I like the look of the early Saturn wagons only. From 96 on they shared the curvy back doors of the sedans, which look truly awkward on a wagon. The early ones look like they were designed as a wagon, then hacked into a sedan with that curvy back window the sedans have.
So when are you going to turbo it?

There's a Tracer Wagon?

Found some MX3 seats.

He's selling the 94+ style of MX3 seats. They aren't as popular, but I may be able to get them for a decent price. Hopefully they sit as low.

They aren't as popular simply because they aren't Recaros. They're still a vast improvement over stock, and easier to find in good shape. They do sit about as low.

Funny story:
After wrecking my ZX2 last year I had the stock swirlies left over, two sets of snows tires, stock suspension, etc.
I sold the wheels to a guy for like $40 and gave him the stock suspension too, also included a mass air flow sensor.
Since getting my 93, I called got in contact with him. Turns out he wants to sell his low mileage Tokico/Sprint combo and a set of 91 GT Swirlies. For $250 Woot woot!
How can I raise the rear of my wagon just an inch? With the Sprint Springs, it might ride just a bit low to be packing it with 200lbs of gear and four guys. Plus a little rake would look nice.

In reply to PHeller:
Stock ZX2 rear springs for your lift? Rubber spacer?
-
March 4, 2010 12:01 p.m. PHeller Dork
I don't know where to source the Rubber spacer or which would be best. I was looking for a thicker lower isolator but I have no idea of the inside/outside diameter of rear springs.
Stock springs would work IF I wasn't planning on running the higher rates and 1.8" drop of the Sprint springs. The springs in question are for a 97+ Sedan, so they might actually be a little higher on my 93 (being lighter).

I've put a ton of stuff in the back of my EGT with the Megan Springs with no clearance or squish issues... Though i'm not entirely sure to be honest what the rear weight bias differences are between the hatch and the wagon.

There's a picture floating around feoa.net of stock zx2, wagon, and eibach springs all next to each other that may be of interest.
Ben, how much did the Megan Springs lower your egt? They're a pretty high linear rate right?

2-2.5". They have a lb rating on them, but i'm honestly unsure now if they're linear or not. I think they're 300f/250r.
The car looks lower than it really is, because the tires that i have on it are way too tall. It's running 205/60-15s, and it should be more like 205/50-15s. So right now, i have no fender gap at all. The car will be even lower when i put the right tires on it, but it won't look as extreme, if that makes sense.
I've got no complaints with these springs at all. No offense towards what i bought from you, but those Eibachs that were on your suspension were downright scary.

I'm looking for it too, I know I have it on my laptop at home.
Ben: Agreed that the eibachs suck, I didn't realize how bad at the time. My ZX2 is on stock springs with S/R struts now and the suspension is not much softer but soo much more predictable.

Maybe i have a hugely different view on soft...
That was one of my biggest complaints with the Eibachs. They were so soft that it made the car wallowy. It dipped like crazy, it felt like i was driving a cheap carnival ride. I was almost scared to let my girlfriend drive it. It scared the hell out of her, too. Throw in the unpredictability of those springs on TOP of the softness? They were a disaster waiting to happen. And i'm not sure exactly why all this was happening. I used to run Eibach Sportlines on my Celica (found them in the hatch when i bought it, so i threw them on) and they felt nothing like that. They weren't GOOD, but they also didn't scare the crap out of me.

These were from somewhere on feoa.net, can't find exactly where.

How do you like your Escort wagon after a few months have passed? I'm looking for a cheap crapwagon for a long commute and it's down to this, a Saturn, or an Esteem if I can find one.
How does the cargo room compare to the Saturn?

Are civics really that expensive in your area? You can expect ~33 average in an 84-87 Si, probably much better in a DX (carb'd,) and I rarely see them down here for more than $1500. Same goes for EF's. Here's two for the price of one. My old 4-speed regularly got 40 MPG, but it is the crappy dual-point motor.

Good looking 86:

Tons of DA integras around here too. Stay away from the automatics. I have to 'work' for 33/34 MPG in mine, but it'll get 29 beaten like a filthy whore. What kind of "stuff" are you hauling, specifically? I can fit 10' long sticks of moulding in the integra and close the hatch. Low mile japanese motors are everywhere. Parts are readily available and affordable. At ~315,000 miles, I'm replacing a noisy wheel bearing; $48 shipped for a brand new hub.
Poopshovel is right on.... I had an 89 civic with a manual, bought it for 700, sold it for about the same amount a year later, car was a lot of fun, for 2 grand you can get a nice one.

If you are looking for better mileage rule out a Subby. You probably wont average more than 22mpg (which isn't that bad) and you'll only likely see maybe 25-26mpg on the highway.

subaru's get rotten mpg, except for the justy.

My 05 Legacy GT auto was averaging 26-27mpg without me driving gently.
Lowest I ever got on a tank was 23.5 right after I got a retune for moar powah and couldn't help but drive like a hooligan.
