Wow, that brings back memories. I was living in Japan in the summer of '91. I remember watching the Le Mans coverage on TV. About a three or four weeks after it won, I went to a 6 hour Group C (or whatever the Japanese equivalent was) race at Suzuka Circuit with a friend and her gear-head cousin. There were a couple of its sister cars cars running under different livery. Those were the most ear-splitting loud race cars I have ever heard.

After a 3 hours or so of walking around and watching from different part of the track, we headed over to Ferris wheel area. I saw a small crowd standing around something in a strange quiet reverence. But I couldn't see what they were looking at. I walked over and looked in the center of the group and there it was. The LeMans winning 787B. The first Japanese car to ever win.

It had not even been washed yet. Aside from a few hand prints where had crew had needed to push it, every bug, all the brake dust, every oil spot, every spec of dirt that was on the car when it finished the race was still there. There were not any signs, or Mazda banners, or marketing fluff surrounding it. Everyone knew what it was and appreciated the chance to stand within three feet of it while it was still had the race patina.

Thanks for bringing back a fond memory.

    Legendary.
I was Johnny Herberts F3 and F3000 mechanic in the late 80's and remember getting this news when preparing for the Indycar race in Cleveland. Herbert was so exhausted from driving he could not make it to the podium

For those who have seen the Ayrton Senna tribute top gear when lewis hamilton drives his F1 car, this would be my dream, my life's fulfillment, and so on.

I will at least see and be close to that car some day and then be drug away by security when i tried to get in it and go for a ride.
