So i got thinking about the physics of polar moment, cars, etc. and how the polar moment of inertia is defined as mass*radius^squared....mr^2

so is it perhaps a fun name based on the idea that moving the engine to the middle/rear reduces the polar moment or simply the way i've always thought about it, mid-engine/rear-drive/2-wheels-driven? perhaps both? discuss.

Mr Too. Jeez, everyone knows him.

That or the MR-1 was a collosal failure...

"They Say" Mid-engine, Rear wheel drive, 2 seats. Or Mid-engine Runabout 2 seater. There's some debate.

Midship Runabout is what is molded into a cover under the hood of the Spyder

dunno. Some Japanese gearheads refer to cars by a two letter code - engine placement and drive wheels.

    • FF - typical fwd
    • FR - typical front engine rwd

Those two I've seen used. So speculation on MR - Midengined RWD. And maybe RR for 911's.

Fixed that for you. I think it originated there, at least I had never heard that silly nomenclature before that.

That nomenclature DEFINITELY Existed BGT. (before grand turismo)

What about the chassis codes AW-11, SW-20 (I'm pretty sure the first letter is the engine code and the second is the platform, the last two numerals have me stumped, and so a MR-S would be a ZZW-??)

I ha always heard Midship runabout 2 seats. but I have heard things that aren't true before, so you know.

I heard the same thing: midship runabout 2 seats

take this for what it is worth

hrm. midship runabout is far less interesting of an origin. that's actually a really stupid sounding name. mid/rear/2seat is pretty good.

but i still like my polar moment idea best

I always thought it was mid engined rear drive 2 seater meself.

I dunno if you're right, but it sounds cool, so I'm going with that. If we say it enough times it will be the truth.

    AW10 - 1st generation, sw20 = 2nd geb , zzw30 would be the 3rd generation

There is actually an AW10 - 3AC powered - 1.5 SOHC, Japan only

    AW11 was the first generation.

And technically, AW15 was the first generation T-tops. But they usually all get called AW11s.
