I noticed today how cheap 5.0L explorers are getting, like multiple choices under $1500 for running driving models. Knowing they have the best parts ford put on a stock 302 (heads, intake, etc) makes the engine great for a swap into my old fairlane. What I am curious about is retaining the computer system from the explorer to run the engine and transmission. I hear I can swap the tailhousing on the awd transmission to have a rwd 4r70 transmission, is this true? I figure there will be some safety or antitheft systems to get around, any links to information on this? The fuel system will probably throw OBD codes if I want to keep my original tank without evaporative emissions, any loop holes here?
I talked one of my buddies into buying a lincoln mk vii to get all the parts for a 5.0L EFI swap, but if I can get the explorer computer and electronically controlled transmission to work in an older vehicle I'd rather go that route.
