anyone remember the (un)event that was Gordon (nascar) and Montoya (F1)... I didn't think so. Lets hope this one is more entertaining.

Found out about this on Thursday and a few people from work are heading over for the day. Sadly I will be sitting in a test cell in Texas for the week, so I will be catching it on the web. Watkins is my second favorite track so I would love to see an F1 car shooting through the turns.

I'll wait for the video so I can hear each driver read the script... you know the one where you can't say a stock car is about as much fun at the Glen as prison rape so you say "it was so much different than what I am used to but I had a lot of fun tossing it around" and then Tony Stewart has to say "I have driven a lot of types of cars from dirt track to IRL but nothing like this". Then they compliment each other's performance in a witty retort old man vs kid chummy way and break for commercial.

I'm instructing for Patroon's 12hrs at the Glen on Monday. I bet it will be more entertaining.

mostly what I remember (didn't watch... read about it later) was that Gordon (with no more practice than he had) would have qualified mid-pack in that yrs US F1... not bad for a NASCAR hack

    I'll be there as well.

To GPS: I can't think of many vehicles more fun to toss around a road course than a NASCAR stocker (Other than an F1 car, of course). Sliding 800 hp around the fast turns with no big wings to hold you down, sounds like a blast.

I wish it was that easy, but to cut down on money wasted on sicktime for people that aren't really sick we've got a department that calls or visits our houses to make sure were really home sick.

I can. How about every sports racer ever made? How about almost every thing that was designed to do a road course? Remember - NASCAR does not race the boot at the Glen... that isn't because cup cars are awesome at braking, turning and changing elevation at the same time.

I'm not saying I wouldn't take it out or like it - I'm just saying a professional race car driver who has been in an actual sports race car isn't going to fall in love with it.

never know, different people have different responses to different things. an F1 driver might have a blast in something like an IMCA dirt late model stock car at a 3/8 mile dirt track in the middle of a corn field somewhere. i wonder if Juan Pablo Montoya has done any of the "Prelude to the Dream" race that Tony Stewart does every summer at Eldora Speedway...

I was at the Glen today instructing while they were setting up the whole thing and doing interviews. The McClaren guys were wandering thru the garages checking out our cars. My brush with fame:

My car has an open header. It is very, very loud. There was a girl, a camera, a microphone and Tony Stewart standing on a little stage behind the stacker trailer - right at the entrance to pit-out around 7PM tonight. I was rolling by on my way out onto the track (open track until 8:30PM!!) and saw them doing some kind of an interview... so I nailed it in 2nd gear all the way out and 1/2 way down the hot pits. The whole crew had to stop what they were doing until was on the track. I am responsible for pile of dirty looks a 2nd take. I rule.

Got back a few hours ago. No pictures from me, but I'll link to them when some friends get theirs online. Its also going to be on SPEED at 8.

It was really cool to see an F1 car in person for the first time, especially at the glen. It was raining a bit, but they were still going for it pretty good. Hamilton had some fun with it, and burned out right off the line in his car. Unfortunately, he only did about 3 laps in his own car, while they each did more (~5 or 6) in each others. Still really cool though. The Mclaren absolutely DROWNED out the stock car, I was amazed how loud it was.

the best part was after Hamilton was done in the stock car, he drifts allll the way through turn 11 (where I was at that point), burns rubber down to start finish, before turning a couple expert donuts. I think he was having fun...
