On one of the Speed shows they said that F1 charged between $20-30M per race for each track to host. That fee was the problem with Indy.

    Obviously FOTA doesn't.

F1 breakaway averted as deal reached Eurosport - Wed, 24 Jun 14:22:00 2009

Peace broke out in Formula One on Wednesday when a deal was reached to avert a breakaway series and teams agreed to further cut costs.

Embattled FIA president Max Mosley, who said he would not be seeking re-election, had been at loggerheads with eight teams over his plans to introduce a budget cap for 2010.

"The basic news is that there will be no split. There will be one championship in 2010 which is I think something we all hoped," Mosley said following a meeting of the FIA's World Motor Sport Council.

"We've reached agreement on a number of items. In particular we've reached agreement on reduction of costs. We've had significant help from the teams. The objective is to get back to early 1990s levels within two years."

The Formula One Teams' Association, headed by Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo, had objected to the budget cap which they felt could lead to a two-tier series with the teams agreeing to the cap being allowed greater technical freedom.

FOTA had said the teams were already cutting costs individually to cope with the global economic crisis and that no overall regulation was needed.

The governing FIA further fuelled matters this month by publishing a 2010 entry list including all the existing 10 teams and three new entrants despite the wrangling.

FOTA responded by announcing plans for a breakaway series next year before last weekend's British Grand Prix but the teams have now committed themselves to F1 until 2012.

"Now the manufacturers, that's to say FOTA, have committed commercially until 2012...as far as the FIA is concerned the commitment is indefinite," the FIA chief added.

Mosley, who earlier this week hinted he wanted to stay on in his post and would not be forced out, will now step down when his mandate ends in October.

"I will now be able to look at Formula One knowing it's peaceful and stable and be able to stop as was always my intention in October of this year so I won't present myself for re-election now that we've got peace," Mosley said.

The Briton survived repeated calls for his resignation last year after a sado-masochistic sex scandal but won a confidence vote in May 2008.

Formula One commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone was thrilled with the outcome.

"I'm obviously very, very happy that common sense has prevailed which I've always believed it would because the alternative was not good at all," he said.

"I'm also I must say very, very, very happy that the teams have come to their senses to stop spending large amounts of money."

FOTA head Montezemolo, who had been due to chair a meeting in Bologna on Thursday to discuss plans for a breakaway, was pleased that this year's rules will continue next season.

"I think the decisions we have shared this morning are important. We will have the rules of 2009, same rules for everybody. It means that we have stability," he said.

I am glad they have dropped that stupid budget cut idea.

and these are the rule changes:

Refuelling is to be banned for the first time since 1993.[91] As a consequence, the cars will be allowed to refuel after the third part of qualifying.

Tyre warmers are to be banned.

A budget cap of £40m ($63.7m, €45.4m) shall be made optional for 2010, with teams that are choosing to take up the budget cap being allowed greater technical freedom, together with unlimited testing. Teams choosing not to take up the budget cap may spend freely, but will have technical and testing constraints. This rule may change due to protests by the FOTA and Red Bull, Ferrari, Toyota and Renault threatening to leave the sport.

The maximum number of cars allowed to take part in a race shall be increased from 24 to 26 cars.

Formula One Management will offer financial support to all new teams from next season, in the form of $10m along with the free transportation of two chassis and 10,000kg of freight to each race.

The minimum car weight will be increased from 605 kg to 620 kg, to stop taller and heavier drivers such as BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica being at a disadvantage if KERS is added to their car.

FOTA has agreed to scrap KERS for 2010 due to poor uptake and pressure from FIA to cut costs.

What a wanker. The FIA needs to forcibly chuck him out on his arse. I'm so tired of Max that I can't even get mad at Bernie anymore, and that's saying a LOT.

No kidding. I think he has finally wrestled the "biggest bastard in racing" crown away from Bernie and Tony G for good.

Let me get this straight: He's threatening to blow up the whole deal because de Montezemelo hurt his feelings? What a berkeleying p*ssy.

I hope FOTA does go through with the split now.

As the "kids" say...word up, man. If I'd been born in Europe, Max would be replacing Phony George on my "I hope your parents give you STDs" list...

Yeah all this article back and forth thing, come one, make up your mind! Those two idiots have been running it whining about every single thing and don't know one thing about making the cars look cooler and making for better racing. Max gone thank god! FOTA is a smart group....... I don't blame some of the others and the tracks for not wanting to host anymore if FOTA ain't involved, heck they should bring back some of the real circuits!

All I got to say is Cosworth's back and going to DOMINATE!

The FOTA deserve this. They had the chance to make a clean break from all this BS, and like a battered wife, they choose to stay with the ones who keep hurting them and then promising not to do it again.

They should have had their lawyers make sure that all the eyes were dotted and all the tees crossed before they gave up on their plans for a breakaway series. They deserve Max and Berrnie. We long time fans of the sport do not deserve them and the teams will have let us down if this crap continues.

Hmmm FOTA's co-dependent? I can live with that description. Unfortunately can the majority of the fans?

The drama already has me putting off watching this year's races (I DVR them) and it might make me quit recording them next year.

+1, signing a deal going to 2012 with those nutjobs still at the helm was a downright stupid thing to do.
