So, say a friend of yours rented a base Fiat 500.  Proceeded to load their family (spouse, two kids), and baggage up a long grade at 75mph.  After 30mins the car throws a CEL, and will only do 55mph.  Oil temp is fine.  Friend pulls over, cycles power, and the auto start/stop feature is disabled,  but CEL is gone.  Car accelerates fine, and friend finishes drive at 60/65 instead.

After sitting 30mins, start stop works again.

also, cruise control has been flaky the whole time.  Will engage, but won’t hold speed.

car has ~1800miles.

“It’s only a rental, just send it”

or

”baby it so you don’t buy the rental place a new engine”

yes, the friend got the insurance.

How would anything your friend is doing with the car constitute any kind of responsibility that would required any kind of insurance.  I would be calling up the rental place and demanding a replacement to insure that your friend does not get stranded some place with a broken car.  This is the rental company problem. I would be looking for a discount on the rental if they can not provide a replacement.  It sounds like a BCM could be going bad or some other electrical issue that they will need to sort out before renting again.
