I'm wondering if this is possible, but with the internet being as it is I figure there might be somewhere (or someone) that has this kind of information.

I'm looking for my mom's old car...

    thanks.

Used to be you could track it through the DMV. I don't know that it's still possible.

It's possible, I'm not sure how, but it can be done. A friend of mine bought a new 88 Mustang GT with T tops, had it a couple of years and sold it. He always regretted selling the car and would bring it up constantly. He knew the VIN and his wife used that to track the car from Mi to Ca, then via the CA DOT she contacted the owner. They then purchased the car back, luckily it had lived most of it's life in CA so it wasn't rusty and he's spent the last 5 years bring it back to showroom condition, including converting back from mass air to speed density etc. It's going to be 100% stock 100 point concourse when finished.

Carfax would tell you what area of the country it has moved to, but no personnal info about owners. Carfax doesn't tell you much if the car has been un-registered/registration lapsed.

The police can (somehow) do this, not sure how John Q. Public could do it, tho.

And I don't think Carfax works for pre-17 digit VINs.

Not sure if this will do what you need but give it a try. Replace the x's with the VIN and it should give you the history of the vehicle. I haven't tried it but saw it on another forum somewhere

    In reply to bidaci:

In the interest of seeing if it were that easy to get a free auto check that easily, I tried this with the title from one of the cars I crushed for scrap years ago. Wanna know what I found out? It doesn't work.
