    I know many Mazda products use engines and/or transmissions from Ford, but how about the 2002 Protege? I found a Protege5, an '02 with low miles, but the auto....? Is this a Mazda unit or the more trouble-prone Ford tranny?

    Is the Protege's engine (the 2 liter), basically the same as the Durotec 2 liter in a Focus?

    I believe that they are from the same engine family, but Mazda will have differences from Ford.

    The P5 is all Mazda. it shares very little, if any, with Ford platforms. The tranny is definitely not the trouble prone CD4E which was in the 626.

    No relation between the duratec (Focus) and the FSDE (Protege) engines.

    Didn't Keith say he used modified p5 struts on his GTX? If am remebering right, that means there is some relationship to the Mazda based Ford stuff...

    Yeah, for a few years the Escort and Protege shared a little bit of stuff but not a whole lot. For instance after 1991 the base Escort used a 1.9 Ford motor and the Escort GT used a Mazda motor but the Protege came only with the Mazda motor. For a long time Mazda managed to keep Ford stuff out of their products, at least for the most part.

    I though it was the other way - Fords use Mazda engines and trannies. I don't think you will find many Ford manufactured parts on a Mazda. Love the Protege5, it is a very good chance that it will be my next ride - 5spd though. The one I drove a few years ago was the only car I liked as much as my Miata.

    My understanding is that Mazda is (was?) responsible for 4 cyl powerplants in the Ford family. Could be true, could be false.

    As for my P5 struts on my GTX - I had to use a welder on the strut Not exactly a bolt-in, more a matter of making the available parts fit. The end result was pretty good though.

    Most of the Escort engines originated in Britain. The only Mazda engine was the 1.8 in the EGT. For quite a few years the Protege/323 and the Escort were based on the same platform. Many suspension pieces interchange. Some transmissions were used on both or at least similar. The Duratec and the Mazda egines started out based on the same design. Since Ford holds less of Mazda shares, things change

    I'm not sure who is responsible for the CD4E. Neither brand will admit to churning out that hunk of crap.
