For those who are calculating if they can afford a Volt (or soon Ford's similar offering) It will take more than a glance.. The formula is the cost of gas plus the monthly payment for a plug in hybrid compared to the cost of gas and the monthly payment for a non-plug in hybrid.. If you are spending $200 a month on gas and your payments, maintenance is around $400 a month you might be able to afford the plug in hybrid.. Couple of interesting points.. the Hybrid battery in Fords SUV the escape is only 150 pounds.. warranty on all hybrid parts is 10 years or 150,000 miles. Local dealers haven't had a single battery or Hybrid failure since 2004

The first few lines of your review kind of sum it up for me: GM made a car that isn't as good as a car it made 15 years ago. How is this a step forward again?

That is only true for some people. Most car purchases aren't entirely rational and plenty of people (like most of us here) place an immeasurable value on things that have no financial return, like acceleration, sound, nicely formed seats, etc.
Hybrids are, imo, MORE reliable than gas-only cars. I agree with you there.
