Yeah, I'm pretty irritated right now. Thinking of staging my own "Tea Party" in my front yard.

Okay, backstory: I'm a VW geek. Currently own two, my Jetta DD and a '91 VW GTI project car. The GTI was going to recieve an ABF swap, but I've been taking my time buying parts, doing research etc... Car has been more or less parked for about a year and a half, with the occasional jaunt around the block.

Got home from work today to find a message and business card from the local Police. Turns out in my city, you are not allowed to have a project car. I have 5 days to get rid of it or they will be forced to send me a nasty letter telling me of my non-compliance with city ordinance, and 21 days from there to get rid of it or I'll be summoned in front of the big bad judge. Keep in mind, this car is on private property, not in the street or anything.

So I call the nice Police lady, who I might add had a bit of a 'chip' on her shoulder..... She explains the ordinance, I express my displeasure at the city's arrogance in thinking they can do this to my beloved GTI. I mean seriously, who do they think they are?

Long story short: I can sell it, junk it, store it, or she tells me I have two other choices: Get it running, insured, registered, "road worthy" (crack in the windshield, so that needs replaced) and be good to go. Not an option right now ($$$). OR I can register it, declare it a "junk" car, which the city says I then have to have FULL insurance coverage on, not just storage or liability, FULL coverage on a car that doesn't run (), and then cover it with a big blue tarp. Okay so let me get this straight: You would rather look at a big blue tarp covered car, than just a car? Rrrriiiiiight, let me get back to you on that.

And the best part: one of my bored old neighbors ratted me out..... Time to break out my Commemorative Gitmo Edition Waterboard.

So: be on the look out for a ran-when-parked '91 mk2 VW GTI big bumper, euro quad round grille, non-sunroof, 1.8L 8v GTI with a spare, disassembled ABA block, ABA 8v head, and additional 1.8l 16v cylinder head in the classifieds soon..... at a very "Challenge" package price in N. Central Ohio.

The proceeds from the sale will be used to buy as many tea bags as I can find to dump on the steps at city hall. berkeleyers...... OR I might go buy the most obnoxious fugly, road worthy vehicle I can find and park it in its place. Like a mettallic mint-green with gold flake 70's Ford Grenada rollin' on 24" spinners.

Okay, thanks for letting me vent.

I would scratch all the VIN numbers off and park it on said neighbor's yard

On second though, don't do that haha.

It's kinda ridiculous that you can't have a project car on private property. Is it on blocks or something? What makes it so unsightly?

Careful, if they are that upset with you, you could get arrested for tea bagging in your front yard.

I would find a spot to store it while you do your research Once done, put it in the garage out of their view if that is an option.

    Good luck

No, not on blocks at all. It's just sitting there, not rusting away or anything, tires inflated. It just doesn't move very often.

Whatever, I guess everything happens for a reason. Maybe the driving gods want me to buy a Miata.....

get a storage unit and lock it up until you have time to work on it.

If you get it in compliance, paint it Neon pink. Park in front of offending neighbor's house.

I've thought about the storage unit thing too. But I don't have a ton of time, between work, school, and traveling to do the photo thing. So when I do work on it, it's a day or two, then a month goes by, I work on it a little more, etc.... So the storage unit thing would just be a PITA I think.

I think I'll get rid of it, and get something that doesn;t need as much work so I can drive it more and do minor tinkering when I can.

I might be misinterpreting the ordinance here, but you have 5 days to remove everything you want to keep off the car. Then you have 21 days to remove the stripped out hulk from your neighbor's view before you have to go to court. Or something like that...

Double check your DMV rules. In CA, we are allowed to register a car as non-operative and keep it on our premises. Don't remember the insurance details though. Look up the rules and you might be able to keep it where it is legally w/ little hassle or expense. Now wouldn't that piss off the neighbor more. :)

The rule is working against you in this case to a degree but in some ways it is good. It keeps certain people from making their yards look like junk yards.

Remove the engine and VINs, put flower pots and potting soil in it. Follow the rules for a new shed on your property.

BTW...a big bug sprayer full of roundup at 3am...spell something on the offending neighbor's front lawn.

What city do you live in? I am in Ashland (20 minutes from Mid-Ohio)

Could you put a car cover over it? I know in some places the police aren't allowed to lift up the cover to see if the car is legal or not.

I would also be interested in it if you do decide to sell it.

Tyler, I'm hoping that you're joking. The OP is violating a city ordinance.

You need to buy a dump truck for you new DD and then paint it pink, park it outside a certain neighbors bedroom and test the air horns at 8.01am daily.

I'd sell it... and then get something that is compliant, but looks like E36 M3, even worse than that thing.

Slate floor sealer in a squeeze bottle. Write something on the paved driveway and watch ti slowly appear over the course of a week-month. It will soak in to the asphalt like watter into a sponge. it washes all the binder out of the pavement leaving just the aggregate and a small amount of asphalt binder to keep it in place kind of. As cars drive over it the stones come loose. You get the picture.

You can not just patch it either as you will still be able to read what was written. You have to do a very large patch to get rid of it.

    Rinse and repete.

Now the really fun part. insult your self.. Yes put something like "I live next to Idiot" with an big arrow pointing at you. Now I know what you are thinking but how can they ever accuse you of insulting your self?

Lets just say the helarity that ensued after this one was priceless. The whole "homeowners association rules" thing kicked in and it just got completely silly. That was a really fun summer. .

Yeah, vandalism is really funny. I think anyone trespassing on my property would think my 12 guage is funny too.

Man, I'm soooo glad I live out in the woods. My neighbors have meth labs. As long as the PoPo don't bust my door down by mistake, I could care less.

Back when I lived in Occupied Texas, I had a dead 4AG motor in the driveway. It was around Christmas. I got a big Christmas themed pic-nic table cloth, wrapped the motor, put a bow on it and called it a lawn decoration. I got tired of having the shiny happy person next door calling the association on me all the time. I called them up and carefully explained how he was loosing his mind and one step out of being violent and it would be best if they ignored him. He started calling the PoPo on me instead of the association. Oh, did my MR2 set off all the car alarms again? Woops.

Check your ordinance close on both the city and state level. Takes a bit of work but it may yield results. We had a new resident move in an immediately start ranting about property values and "beautification". Shortly ordinances were being put in place for everything.

Discovered a few quirks about definitions of "junk cars" that actually pulled a car with no engine out of the definition. "For Sale" sign bought one fellow 90 days until he could make other changes.

Texas definition of "Junk car" allowed for me to have current licence plates and I was good.

Get me a copy of the ordinance and your state...I'll find a way!

10-4 on that. There are 8 vehicles in my yard, in various states of repair, and nobody says a word. You can't see them from the road, so it's not an eyesore. The whole HOA thing seems very forieign to me; I could never stay in a place like that, no matter how nice it was.

Move to somewhere that has nice people.

+1 I live out on a dead end road. If any one was to be an shiny happy person over this kind of stuff my neigbors would get the worst of it. And we are down to only 3 "off the road" vehicles

Been there twice myself...except they came both times in the dark with the blue lights on! WTF!

1st one. My drag car. But the by-law stated if i was an offical member of a racing club AND the car had a racing number i could apply for a permit for $50 for the year. Done. Then sold it, as i needed the cash at the time.

2nd time. Was my converted school bus that hauled the drag car. It had only been in the yard two days, as i used to store it else where but $$ to store was to high it came home. I pulled the driveshaft, hung a tow bar on the front and reg as a trailer. Took it to court and judge laught when i showed up with pictures and a copy of the law detailing what a trailer was. He chewed out the cop, and tossed the case but i had to pay the $60 court fee. WTF I won but did I?

Not see them back in a long time..

Can you put up a cover it garage? but it inside and pile fire wood around it so it looks like a wood shed.

Only half-heartedly. Then again...I wouldn't shoot someone over it.

The offending neighbor should have talked to the OP about it before turning him in.

Can we get a picture of this eyesore, in its current setting?
