I'm looking at a set of wheels for the BMW right now, and, according to the seller, they have a set of "Hankook Ventus C-50 255/50/zr16" tires mounted to them. These are going to be for autocross. Am I right in thinking th eC-50 compound will be too hard? I know they aren't A6s, but the price is really, really right.

Try them, you may like them. I found that tires work differently under different butts. Someone poo poo'd tires that I ran last year but the car kept pace even with the boat anchor of a driver behind the wheel.

You wont get FTD but they'll be better than street tires.

The C50 is a medium compound. Probably better than R6 for auto-x

It's a 318ti... no FTD's in my future. Sounds like I'll go for these. They are barely used and mounted on wheels for about $300 shipped.
