Has anyone found a page describing the parts he's using in the buggy? The diff, brakes and all suspension parts look like fairly serious off road racing parts.

I did the same. If you zoom in on where it claims his GPS tracker is at you can see what looks like a swimming pool. My guess is unrepairable damage and out.
Currently traveling at 0mph
Of course, as I write this it is 5:30 in the morning out there. Maybe he needed sleep. We will see if the car starts back up and moves forward. -

It sounds like he was able to drive out of the desert under his own power. He just posted a picture of the car at a checkpoint and one of he and his copilot smiling so it couldn't have been TOO bad.
The car looks like it had fun!
