Maybe I could just get one of those escorts and she could drive me around this summer.

It's hard to pull 3500lbs at 30 mpg cheaply.

I don't need it to get 30 mpg towing. I need a higher-MPG vehicle that will tow 3500 if necessary.

I get that. It's still tricky. There's always this.

Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat.

I had a car. 35mpg highway. Able to tow 1500kg, which is about 3300lb. Seats 7.

"Oh, that doesn't exist!", I hear you say.

Go find yourself an '83-'85 Volvo 245 Diesel. Sure, it's only 82hp. You won't get anything done in any sort of hurry, but you will get it done.

You need 3500lb capability to tow the boat? What the hell do you have, a pontoon party barge?

Not hatin', Curtis..I was just surprised by the comment. And yeah, I forgot that fully half of that would be the stinking trailer..

A Ford Ranger would be good too it gets very good gas mileage, mine got 27 actual mpg's on an island where there is a stop light every half mile or so.

You say you have other cars.. wouldn't 2000 + reg & ins on an additional vehicle plus getting it ready (it will probably need something) buy quite a bit of gas even at today's prices?

You say you have a Impalla SS that gets 18. Lets say you take it. Lets say you buy a vehicle that gets 30mpg for $2000 and by the time you're ready to leave you got $2500 into it. You need to go 4000 miles. Your new car would use 133 gallons of gas at a total cost of ~3033. Your Impalla would use 222 gal @ cost of 888. A savings of 2145. If you need to haul something down with you your Imp should be able to tow and you should be able to get it set up for less than 2145..
