How do car seats fit in back? I'm shopping to replace our '95 Legacy. We've got a 10 month old now and will probably have another munchkin in a year. Based on my E36 I had written off the E46 as having small back seats.

They're a little tight--but both the rear facing and the forward facing seats are fine. You have to not mind the front seats getting kicked by a toddler or the seat in front of the rear facing seat having to be moved a little forward.

I had a toddler seat and a booster seat in my e46 wagon and was fine with it.

We have had a rear facing and front facing seat in ours. We
re both close to 58and never felt short on space: we could have the rear facing seat behind the driver on long trips so that Stace could nap. Well have one of each seat in the car this spring, hopefully. The tike can definitely kick the seats, but so far doesnt seem to want to do it. Thankfully. ;) We took the car on some mild (dry) snowmobile trails in Northern Ontario this weekend - front facing seat in the middle in the back, four adults. These cars are incredibly practical. :)The car is WAY better than the E30, E36 and `98 Subaru Impreza wagon in which we put rear facing seats before. The E30 was a no go unless the passenger had no legs or the seat was in the middle. The E36 has a pretty awkward door opening for hauling a seat in and out of, and the Impreza required the passenger to be moved forward an surprising amount.

If you're shopping E46 wagons, look at E39 wagons too. Same price, similar mechanicals, more space.
