I got this crazy idea.
I've got an Escort Wagon with all kinds of engine options...but Honda motors are cool and plentiful.
How does one put a newer Honda motor into a not-Honda?

A big hammer?
A welder?
I'm looking for more specific answers.
If you do it as a transaxle and engine combo, it is just a fabrication effort. Best to start with a donor Honda rather than just a drivetrain.
As a standalone engine effort, keep in mind that many Honda engines spin backwards.
Here is a Rabbit truck with a k20.
Any more info?
Edit: Found some.
K-Series spins the same way. Swap is very similar to CRX swap. Weld in motor mounts, use standalone, and in some cases get custom axles.
There are kits available to swap Honda engine into original Minis. That is all I've got. But I vote you drop a big ol' J-series in the Escort.
Yeah, drop a v6 from a honda minivan in there. As for the K-series, people don't regularly use them because they are so damn expensive.
Are you just looking for something different to drop in there? because you can pretty easily drop in a mazda motor and boost it. I just don't think that when you go to the trouble of a honda swap into a non-honda you'll be happy with the low power you'll be getting.
Andrew
It's my understanding the BP motor into the 1.9 CVH bay is a complete rewire.
Considering all the aftermarket available for Honda motors, I'd rather utilize the more common engine/trans and then source a standalone.
I could go with a KLZE or some other higher powered motor, but those engines are just as hard to find and don't have the aftermarket the Honda motors do.

I like this idea. I'm thinking mid-engine swap.
The J-series was also available in the Saturn Vue.
Honda H22A1 drivetrain in the rear of a carbon-shell "Mini"
Honda turbo K24 into the back of the new project, a mid-engine "Seven", called Midlana
The whole "forward/backward" rotation thing is a non-issue if you use the entire drivetrain.
Why don't you see if you can do something along the lines of the Kugel Komponents V8 Focus kits. I know there isn't a lot of similarities between the cars but use it as inspiration for a home-brew, GRM approach.
5.0 Fords make more power than Hondas stock for stock, probably cheaper, aftermarket is certainly there, you'd be making it rwd, and keeping it Ford and you'd have that whole sleeper thing going for you.
In reply to PHeller: I vote S2000. Get the entire drivetrain. Anyone can do FWD to FWD.
I'm with bravenrace. Fwd Hondas are like...(something lame), if you dont ...(do something lame with them) they just get ...(even lamer). (I cant think right now...
)
If you're going to do front engine / rear drive I'm with Carson. 5.0L all the way. Plentiful, cheap, and lots of aftermarket.
Im really thinkin about dumping some sort of Honda motor into the Fiat when i get it.
wasn't there an article a while back about a honda powered x1/9?

I would think Si motor into an X 1/9 would be a LOT of fun
Although it would never happen, if it did I'd want to minimize costs. The K-Series would probably be out because of the expensive.
A 302 V8 would be cool, but it would also require a tunnel to be made, and in a small car like the Escort it may get tight inside. I'm still wanting to use this vehicle as a DD.
3sgte?

I saw an EK civic online once that had a 3sgte swapped into it. I raged.
Anyways... PHeller, your easy choices WITH aftermarket are:
2.0zetec
Mazda BP (complete rewire simply means swap harnesses. CAKE.)
KLDE/KLZE (Been done, plenty of info, you won't need aftermarket unless you want to go faster than 13s.)
Mazda F2T/FE3. An FE3 would be AWESOME. An F2T would be utterly terrifying. Both can be done using mostly OEM parts, and the grounds for megasquirt have already been laid.
This is a friend of mine's Ford Escort Mk1:

The KL motors aren't too hard to find, they are usually attached to entire running probes and mx6s for cheap in our area. I bought a 100k non-running probe gt for $700 a couple years ago in willow street. All it needed was a crank position sensor.
