So, I'm gathering parts, and I'm stuck finding a decent suspension. I've been prowling vwvortex looking for bilsteins or konis for a challenge friendly price. I'd love to be able to fit coilover sleeves in the budget with 450/550 springs (as a starting point), but I'd be happy finding quality shocks and junkyard truck or van springs.
Anyone have any leads for A2 or A3 VW suspension?

Start going to local VW meets, make friends, get in the loop. I picked up a full set of mk3 bilstien sports with around 3000 miles for $50. Right place, right time, the guy was switching to an air suspension setup.
