I saw the aftermath of something similar on I-75 in north georgia last year. Except instead of impaling the car, it tore the Saturn station wagon into 3 large pieces.
One dead body was lying on the interstate and another hanging across the guardrail. A third person survived.

I'm not pretending they're perfect, they aren't. Just that they seem to be a whole lot better than I'd knee-jerk expected them to be.

I've seen the favorable videos, and when they work as designed I think they are awesome. But imagine This one in a Miata.

Having had the experience of going through the top of a tree in a Miata I can say I would rather have a solid guard rail. Getting whipped by a bunch of thin wirey branches sucks ass. Not to mention whole time praying the car didn't roll. At least with the solid rail you tend to bounce as long as you don't impale the car on the end of the rail.
