And for all the true hippie it has to be not american to be worth buying, Ford licenses Toyota's hybrid system from the Prius for us in their Hybrid cars.

Well, Ford copied Toyota's system almost to the tee, then they were forced to pay Toyota for the rights.

I read that they actually asked Toyota for system because when all this hit they were too far behind.

Where do you all hear this stuff?

The Ford engineers came to the same technical conclusion, just after Toyota did. Since they got the patents first, royalties had to be paid.

    No parts are the same.

Funny how the Fusion MKZ both are more efficient than the camry.

    Business case study from Harvard

Which part, the fact that Ford licenses the technology from Toyota? Or the opinion that Ford aksed Toyota for the solution?

It's true that a license is paid. Other than that, though. There's also a lot of news in the last year where Toyota and Ford have reached a technology sharing agreement. But that doesn't mean at all that hybrid technology wasn't developed independantly, just coming to the same solution.

The presented data that Ford was behind in the development of electric hybrid system. How much and what was needed from Toyota was not discussed.

Why is this such a burr under your saddle? I like Fords. They are always my first consideration on every purchase and I go from there.

What burrs my saddle is when people claim that the whole thing was bought, lock, stock, and barrel from Toyota. It was not. It also burrs me when people think that it wasn't developed in the US, and had to be totaly bought from Toyota. Both opinions have been stated in this thread.

The way you replied in my first quote even suggested that Toyota did all of the work. Your second statement (this one) is what happened, and is much clearer.

I don't like it when people disparage the US and engineers here. Particularly in the auto industry. There's a reason the US patent office is opening it's first branch office outside of DC here in Detroit this year.

The violent crime rate in DC is down and the turnover rate at the patent office isn't high enough?

I am a US engineer working for a Japanese company. I know what it is like to be looked down on (this is a figurative statement given I am 6'5" and they are Japanese) because you are American.

I no longer have this problem because I went to Japan and pointed out their mistakes. After you make them loose face because of lack of skill, they stop looking down at you and start giving you respect.

Just for clarification here is how I prioritize my auto searchs

    1 Ford

    ....

9x10^999999 and every car on the planet has been destroyed Toyota.

I don't hate hybrids, I just hate new cars. They suck.

It really depends on your needs..

I traditionally have bought cars new and driven them into the ground.. That's because I'm a salesman and put 50-60,000+ miles per year on them.. when they are tired and old they aren't worth anything but tend to still be reliable, since I do a good job of maintenance.

Having sold cars I realize that the price of used cars has nothing to do with their real value but rather their marketability..

When selling I often sold cars for at or very near cost. While used cars I could sell for 3-4-5000 profit.. In fact the dealership used to drive the demo's over into the used lot and the price we'd wind up selling it for was often thousands more than we'd sell the same thing new..

It's not like people that paid that high a price didn't know how to use the internet. It's that there are new buyers and used buyers and used always wind up giving more profit to the dealership than new does..

One of the reasons there have been so many Dealerships closings is because many dealerships didn't really sell New cars since they are so unprofitable..
The profit center in a car dealership is parts and service.. Not New car sales!
