2002 Elantra GT 2.0 L ...
Has anyone here changed a Hyundai timing belt recently? Are there any special concerns or tips?
I know I have several for early Hondas ( we had them down to 20 mins )
Any other parts that should be changed "while your in there"? ie water pump, thermostat ? etc?
No issues... yet. But after a recall ( air bags ) I was informed that it should be changed every 60 K Car has 65 and has been a great daily driver. Gets 26 -32 mpg and still has plenty of torque and guts.
Done multiple.... not hard to do. Key tip #1, align crank to TDC first, keeps the cam from trying to jump time. Impact (big) to pop the crank pulley bolt. Break the w/p pulley bolts BEFORE you pop the belt loose.
Other than that, it's fairly straight forward. I would HIGHLY recommend an OEM t-belt. Half the aftermarket ones don't have the right shape on the teeth so they chew themselves up.
Waterpump is a good idea, but if the pump feels fine it's good to go until 120k. Also the accessory belts, plugs and wires are all due at 60k too.
I love my 02GLS. 105k miles of abuse and it still keeps churning. Getting 34-35mpg daily.
