Salanis...I was there in December, Sunday only. I did not get to drive, but I sponsored my buddy in a black Silvia. Too wet Sunday for him, but some awesome action.

Nah, he's right, LOL! With drifting, if you're not INTO it, you won't get it. I've heard it called everything from monotonous and repetitive to mundane and boring.

It is what it is. You really can't make drifting what it's not. Most of the people who SCREAM about it, are those that are into it. If you're not into it, even as a fellow motorsports enthusiast, you won't get it and you won't have a lot of fun watching it.

Axles and diffs mostly. Clutches and driveshafts are also at risk. This is all assuming you don't hit anything, which is a very real risk (at least on a track, in parking lot courses there's usually more room for error).

I see kinda...I have been to several other types of motorsports that have drift exhibitions and when the drifters come out people flock to the fence to see them. Sell out crowds at venues like Infineon, Las Vegas, and Irwindale kinda says it is not boring to watch. Those are just the ones on the west coast. I do see if you are into grip it just looks like they are out of control. If you know what you are looking at then it is pretty exciting. Watching two guys go through a corner at 100+mph no big deal...doing it sideways within inches of each other, and tryng to hit your clipping points that is a different ball of wax all together.

I would actually rather watch NASCAR than drifting. To me, drifting is nothing more than a skilled burnout contest. Outgrew my awe of smoke and flames in my teens.

Ouch! That is hitting below the belt...lol.

You might get a kick out of Samuel Hubinette...who drifts a Dodge Viper. Being able to vaporize those monster BFG's at 100 plus is pretty cool to me. To each is own though.

Drifting IS fun to do, but watching it on TV it's just the same thing over and over. Maybe if I saw it in person and could actually tell just how fast they were going it would be more exciting. But I'm sure nascar might be better in person too.

Reason I'd participate in a drift event:

    1) I've got a 240SX, it's a given. 2) Auto-X Events frown upon going sideways at every turn 3) Parking lots are usually not large enough to sustain drifts over 25mph. 4) Help learn RWD emergency maneuvers in inclement weather.

I think I could see paying to romp once or twice, but after I got hang for it (and driving the car in slippy conditions) I'd be alright.

I would love to get payed to drift. Hell I'd love it if someone would just buy my tires so I could drift all the way to work.

The difference is that NASCAR is racing. There is a winner which is not decided by a panel. Tires are no incinerated for show. However, there are similarities. Those with limited attention spans and who are easily amused are captivated by clouds of smoke and the smell of burning rubber. I wonder what these people would give or do for a sack of shiny beads?

Wow, as an omnivorous gearhead I can't imagine someone being bored by highly revving engines and tire smoke. I'm not a drifter but think it's awesome to watch. Truly to each his own, I guess?

Any drifting stuff near Columbus, Ohio?

I actually think drifting is fun to watch, at least when you watch it live. There's a lot of variety of what people try, and people screw up enough that it's exciting when someone really gets it right.

No, I won't call it racing. But it is a lot of fun.

Wow did not mean to stir the pot so much... Seriourly learning to drift will make you a better driver. On the flipside grip driving will make you a better drifter. Cross training will make you better. I think guys like Rhys Millen, and Tanner Foust make a pretty good salery building cars, doing movie stunts, and rally racing that they do not have to compete in the Formula Drift series. I like to think that they do it to hone there skills. Here is one for you moparman Mopar goes sidways

I think whether or not drifting is fun to watch comes down to course design. Live or televised, I find watching cars slide around a technical course highly entertaining (like that Ken Block video.) However, sometimes the course might consist of a series of big sweepers, where drivers just pick a line and nail the throttle. Boring.
