    Folks,

I have been trying to use the following services to locate a late model Subie diff.

One service gets me nuthin' but spam, the other gets me nuthin'

Anybody got any hot tips for using these guys? Are there other good services out there?

    http://www.getusedparts.com/ http://www.car-part.com/

    TIA,

    Rog

Yeah, Their URL was in the draft for the first message, did not appear when published. They are the folks they are non-responding.

Yards on car-part have to PAY to be in that locator, in addition to some others. So a LOT of yards aren't on it for that reason. As for email responses, you expect some of these places to actually use a computer? A few yards I have dealt with the "computer" is the one guy that knows what is in the yard and what is sold, even knows what to charge for a part.

I'd try to find a local yard with a lot of foreign stuff in it and ask what they have, if they don't have what you want ask if they can look on "the network" and see what develops.

What he said. I work for a yard that's on car-part.com, and if you actually want something you find there, call the yard. When you're constantly on the phone, it's hard to find time to check email, and I'd be surprised if some of these yards know how.

I have used http://www.uneedapart.com/ with success. After submitted a part request I get multiple emails from multiple wrecking yards. No charge.

My scaravans engine was sourced on car-part.com. Wasn't too bad

As was mentioned, call the yards listed on car-part.com. I've had 100% success when calling, about 10% success when emailing. The has been everything from the glass for a door mirror to an engine/transmisssion combo. Calling the yard usually results in things arriving at my house in days, emailing takes days to weeks to get a reply, if anything at all.

I got an engine about a month ago from a place off of there, had to call, but 100% satisfied.

A rule of thumb I use to prioritize stuff is:

    1. Things handed to me by my boss.
    2. Things with a written deadline.
    3. Phone calls
    4. Staring out the window.
    5. Get more coffee
    6. Talk to person next to me
    7. Email

versus car-part, if you need subie parts, why not hit up the subie forums? Nasioc seems to have everything, for a price...

    In reply to Schmidlap:

I've never had a yard send me a part directly, I've always done that through a yard and just had it shipped from one yard to my local. Any problems with going direct? Shipping costs decent?

    In reply to pres589:

I always ask for the yard to include shipping for that price. Most of these places have corporate accounts with R&L, Roadway, UPS/FedEx Freight or even freightquote.com type places besides UPS/FedEx. So they do get a discount over Joe Blow.

I remember getting a rear seat for an ext cab Ram from MI to WV for like $20 in shipping costs. Yes, it was on a pallet too.

I use car-part daily at work - both for actual parts shopping and for price point comparisons. Do the search, call the yard, negotiate a price, done.

LKQ is another super useful source. They are always a bit more expensive than Joe's pik-a-part, but their warranty and parts quality is always superior. Not to mention, they are hooked up with so many yards that its rare they can't find what you need.

If you need smaller, shippable parts, call Snyder's here in TX. 800-460-8025, x129 for Dee.

The few times I tried to email off the list it was worthless. I guess that's where I should have just picked up the phone.

Phone or not. It's a waste of electrons when you're looking for a 90-93 Celica GTS front fender.
