I always thought Stig name was a play off of the Brit term "git"--which means "tool/jerk/prick".
"Gits" backwards = "Stig"
Personal theory--I just don't know if it's valid.

Way back in the late '70s and early '80s, Stig Blomqvist was pretty much revered in Britain for his exploits slinging those big 99 Turbos through the woods on the RAC WRC event. Great name for a young man of Scandinavian heritage.
I remember the article in C&D where Stig taught Bedard and the other staffers how to left-foot brake on pavement in their showroom stock 99. Fun stuff.

"The Stig" from Brit TV is a number of people. Those that are interested normally know approximately which fairly well known racing driver he is at any given time. Definitely not Hamilton! Blomquist was also known as "on the roof" Blomquist. Pretty much fearless, and if he didn't win it was often because the car was upside down!

You're thinking of Erik Carlsson in regards to "on the roof"
