I understand that the '99-00 NBs in the US had something special going on with the 1.8s.  Something about VVT or high compression or something, I never paid as much attention as I should.

Did this translate to the 1.6 in Japanese market models, or were they the regular B6 made since forever?

Cant speak to the JDM aspects, but the 99/00 had the benefit of a better flowing head WITHOUT vvt.

As well as solid lifters. And the JDM '99-'00 1.8L BP-5A engine also had slightly bigger camshafts and the "squaretop" intake manifold that was for a long time the best intake manifold for Mazda BP. But as far as I know, the JDM 1.6L NBs just used a regular B6

ok, hmm.  Finding several B6 drivetrain swaps for remarkable cheap and they are being specified as '99-00, implying that they are different.

The overseas 1.6 engines got EGR at some point, but there no power mods of which I am aware.
