Well, the $150 speakers finally bit the dust. Since I bought them eight years ago, my car has transformed into a $500 beater. I will not be putting in 20-25% the value of the car in speakers, so I ask this: Are there any cars one might find in a junkyard that have nice speakers in them? Yes, I should assume that higher end cars like Cadillacs, Lincolns, Lexus, etc..should have nice ones. The size is 6 x 9. Any thoughts?

I wish you luck. Not really worth the time/effort. I would just search craigslist for used stuff.

What he said. Most factory stuff still sucks, I'd just put some used speakers in it.

Yup, I'll third that. There are some decent speakers out there, Chrysler has used infinity for years, GM used Bose, Ford had JBL, but 6X9 is not a popular EOM size. I bet you could pick up a set of 6X9's off Craigs for $10 that'll outperform any Factory stuff.
Another note. Some of the factory stuff has some bizarre impedances as well. -

Forget anything factory. I'd look for wrecked "kid" cars. Think of the demographic most likely to have the desire and surplus income to afford replacing their car stereo with good stuff. Imagine what that guy drives and look for those cars in the yard. You might get lucky.

Infiniti used bose 6x9s with a factory 100 watt amp in G20 sedans 99-02. They sound pretty damn good.
EDIT...DOH, I lied, speekerz are 6 inchz...I haz a fail

Most factory stuff is garbage, junkyard you've got exposure to the elements as well as unknown quantity + used issues, I'd shop CL or eBay. 45 seconds on Crutchfield shows $45 Pioneer 3-way 6x9's, or there's this thing;

Under $30 for brand new 3-way stuff that probably sounds acceptable, a little work with an external crossover to kill the upper end might be wise...

I'd also check ebay, CL or audio forums.
If you do go junkyard shopping, leave the Bose stuff where it is - you'd have to transplant the whole system as they use one amp per speaker, the speakers are low impedance compared to 'normal' speakers and the headunits don't sport standard connectors either.

so paper 6x9s from the front doors of a chrysler minivan.would be great of the back speakers. no need for a 3 way. who needs tweeters behind them.

Like with subwoofers, there are plenty of budget companies these days that make great speakers at affordable prices. My dd is worth about 1 g and I'm re-outfitting the stereo. Its worth a lot more to me because I'm not paying on it. Id rather not dig through wrecked cars for electronics. Especially audio. Corrosion is awful in those environments.

I've scored volumes (no pun intended) of used Infinity (the audio company, not the car company), Bose, Sony, and other aftermarket speakers at the pull-a-part over the years. Go out and look for that stuff, and skip the OEM crap. Don't pay more than $5 per speaker though.

I would only go aftermarket as well, seeing that it wasn't corroded. Shouldn't be to hard to check before taking. I still prefer new.

If you had of needed 5 1/4" speakers, I have some good JVCs that I would have sold you for next to nothing.

Factory speakers old enough to be in a junkyard will almost always have dry rot in the surrounds and will sound just as bad as whatever you removed.

I picked up a set of 4 Boston Acoustics from Hondas that had been put in the yard. One was at my normal yard, and they charged $3 for the set. The Other pair came from a really nice yard, and when I went to the counter, they told me to get lost, that it's not worth writing up speakers. I was happy with that answer, ESPECIALLY being that it wasn't a yard I had to pay to get into.
Look for Hondas in the yard. Most of them have round speakers, but some have 6x9 speakers in the rear deck. That's how I found these, I popped the trunk and looked up. Takes a minute per car, and I'd say about 50% of newer wrecked Honda Civics and Accords had decent aftermarket speakers. The "kid car" comment above is pretty much correct.

If you are going to a u-pull-it just for speakers, you might as well go get a 20 dollar pair at the local Walmart or something. If you have to go anyway, I'd say there is no harm in checking out speakers, but new low end speakers would probably be more than sufficient.

My '04 Ram uses 6x9's in the front doors. The stock base speakers suck, so you might be able to find a wrecked Ram with aftermarket speakers in them too.

This is true- I tend to agree with the folks who say factory stuff isn't worth pulling, but foam surrounds are fairly easy to replace. I don't have it handy, but I even tracked down 6x9 foam at one point for not a lot of money. I think the google machine found it.
Ah, yup.
