They aren't bad cars! They just have a bad rep (the mullet mobile)! The L98 TPI though, the intake manifold struggled to get enough air into the engine after 4500rpm though, that could be a big problem...but those only came in auto.
They have a lot of potential, and if done right look amazing. I just prefer the look of the 4th gens over all the others.
I'm semi on the look out for a t top 3rd gen firebird, v8 stick
305 stroked out to a 335 is a pretty fun stroker motor.
3rd Gen Camaros aren't bad cars...I've owned a couple. Stock parts are semi cheap and available everywhere.Look for one with 4-wheel disk if you can. I've seen Corvette brakes on the front of these cars, which fit with some work. If you get a T-Top, keep in mind you might wanna bolt in subframe connectors when you get over say 400 hp...the motor will flex the car.Also the stock control arms are stamped steel..boxed arms are cheap and some come with poly bushings
Could always find a basket case for cheap and build it up. Camaros of that era share the same bolt pattern as GM G-Bodys ( Montes, Cutlass, Grand Prix, Regal) and some years of the S-10 pick up too

yes, but building a 350 or 383 would be easier. Would dumping that kind of money into a low end block with 2 bolt mains really be worth it?
IIRC, on the hp rating note, i think the 305 HO was rated at 205
edit as for the t-top, it would get sub frames and a 6 or 8 point... not the best idea for the street but...
while on this topic i saw a 4th gen Trans Am with 3rd Gen IROC wheels on it last night. I threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Somewhat related to the GM topic, I saw a dumped S-10 close to the third gen vintage of Camaros that was running E46 M3 wheels..yes E46 M3 wheels!

I have one and loved it. I wish I had another one. Once one understand the performance parameters and works within them I believe it is a very cool car. The key numbers are 300 hp, and 400 hp. The rear is good for 300, and the trans is good for 400. They've been made to handle and brake very well. My preference would be to start with a hardtop 305 with a t-5 and do the brakes and handling bits first. Then change the ea, the the trans, then go mad with the engine. This post is a year old, but I had to throw in my pennies as I miss my Z28 THAT much...

yes.. BMW runs 5x120mm.. chevy camaro runs something like 5x120.3 when converted to metric. I ran a camaro minispare for a while in my ti
