Got a line on one for short challenge money. Its an 87 SE, so v6 hatch rwd goodness. Anyone know how strong the tranny is, how light you can get them and whats the S12 suspension like to work with?

    Much grassy arse

S12 suspension is nearly all interchangeable with S13 to the best of my knowledge, so there's your source of aftermarket stuff.

Don't know how strong the trans is, or how light you can get a V6 one. I know you can get the 4-bangers down in the low 2000lbs area.

I've heard that there's some parts availability issues for the 200SX only stuff, and that most people who build them wind up having to make alot of stuff. But thats the GRM way!

When I was in auto shop in high school, one of those was outside the shop. It was identical to how that one sounded, 87 V6, 5-speed. It belonged to a student who had graduated and forgotten about it, and they gave him three years to pick it up. Well when I was there time ran out, and although me and some friends were gonna go in together to buy it, while we were on spring break it went to the crusher :(

Man, I don't know, but I really want to see one built! I flirted with the idea for my Street Prepared build but decided to go with the Celica because I have more experience with it and some better set up info available. But if you need any encouragement to go for it, - GO FOR IT!!

Its a nh car and needs some rear rust repair but i'm pretty much convinced. Seems likely its the same tranny as the z31 with the same vg30e which seems fairly stout and they have r200 diffs stock.

Very cool car, but it can be hard to find some parts for.

S-12.org forums will help you out much more than I can.

I can tell you that the v-6 is the same one as in the z31 300zx. I wonder if the vg30et (z31 turbo engine) will fit in there. I know that ka24de (s13, altima, nissan trucks) engines are a common swap, usually with the turbo (ka24det) as are the sr20 n/a and turbo engines. I love these things as they have that similar look to the AE86, but are rarer. Then again, I love old japanese tin if you couldn't tell.

    Some Inspiration:

That is Henry Nguyen's car...probably the most blogged about s12 I have seen.

    Wow. Nissan 240s(e)x. That's one serious S12.

I would love to get one for a fun car and drop in an SR or turbo a KA . There is one in my local yard so if you need parts you can't find let me know. $200 is a steal for a running S12.

    I still miss my S13.

it's definitely a heap right now, but i feel like it's got potential. a swap is definitely in its future eventually but likely not nissan based.

Those cars are cool, and the V6 should be sweet! Awesome 80's styling! Do a good deed and save it!

^RB swap Moar inspiration. I miss my s12... I saw this in modified a couple months back on the newsstand and was really mad. At any rate, s12silvia.com is another really good source too. The v6 is amazing. 3rd gear chirps once I gutted the car. The suspension is the only really bad point on the car in stock form.

    BUMP

Found an 84' S12 Turbocharged car for sale. Are the turbo fours as desirable as the later V6 cars? Do they love added boost like most 80s cars with turbos?

    Feb. 15, 2012 3:43 p.m. 92CelicaHalfTrac SuperDork

The turbo should have the CA18DET. Not a bad motor.

Moar bewst is a good thing, but i don't know the upper limits of the factory turbo. You can count on a few PSI of leeway, though.

    DEWIT!

If you do find a V6 though, maybe combine it with a trashed 300ZX and enjoy moar-bewstes!

i'd rather have a turbo CA than a n/a VG

  • Nitroracer

    Feb. 15, 2012 7:03 p.m. Nitroracer SuperDork

I know the later SR engines get all the love, but the CA was still used into the S13 chassis, jut need to find some people that mess with them. Just looking at wikipedia the dual cam cylinder head makes for a good bump in horsepower on the CA but was never sold here - unless you count a naturally aspirated pulsar NX that I'll never find in a junkyard.

    Handle decent?

    VQ35s are pretty cheap

Depending on the budget, VG30DE motors are VERY cheap as well, and make decent power with just bolt-ons ~225whp. Weight is your enemy there, but it would still be quite fun in a 2500lb car.
