reliable enough for DD duty? Things to look for? Found one locally for a decent price, thinking of taking a look at it.

m10's are indestructible. and they don't make enough power to break anything else about the car. with the right exhaust they even sound cool, for a 4 cylinder.

    only danger is rust.

mine was slow, was the slowest dd I've had in a decade. I still miss it.

btw, mine had WELL over 200k miles too.

    +1

And if you get ambitious, you can Megasquirt the engine and probably free up some power. Then you can add a turbo. M10s like turbos.

02pilot makes a good point, other than the rust, the fuel management may be decrepit by now. Fortunately they're simple and most of the stuff's available and affordable. Mine never did get greatfuel economy. To be fair, I drove it like it owed me money. But even on long trips it didn't do a ton better than 30mpg.

OR just megasquirt it, and enjoy the satisfying thunk your VAM makes when you throw it.

IIRC, at least in the UK they have a reputation for cam problems (worn lobes), mainly caused by people not keeping on top of the oil changes. I also vaguely remember that there are kits in Germany that supposedly fix the problem for good.

Might not be a problem over here that much given that people in the US seem to tend to get the oil changed much more frequently than in Europe.

With oil changes at a decent interval being assumed, the only thing that can go wrong with cam oiling specifically is that the hollow bolt that holds the sprayer bar can come loose and weaken the oil flow over the lobes. This is not as common on the M10 as on the M30, but it does happen. The valvetrain is the weak link on M10s, but it ain't very weak.

The red headed "hot" stepchild of the E30s. It's light (~2300-2400lbs) and accepts just about all the normal suspension goodies.

They do have rear drum brakes if I can remember, but disk brake arms bolt up without much issue.

The M10 is tank like. It runs even when it seems as it shouldn't. It also love boost . . .

I paid $300 for my last 318i. I'm sure that was at least half of it's appeal to me. Kinda like why I love ramen noodles. They're not that good, but you can spend 5 times as much and not get something better.

You'll want to just grab the suspension off a later E30, so you can get rear disc brakes AND the later larger strut tubes.

    :( gone.... :(

500.00 e30 that supposidly only needed a clutch, didn't even last 24 hrs. Oh well, I'm picking up another board members miata soon, I was trying to be proactive in avoiding the upcoming arguments over who drives what, which day....have to keep looking.

One can dream can't they? Hoping to hear very soon about my summer appeal. That would have all but paid for both, then I could get rid of the crap can I'm driving, and not feel bad about getting rid of our only running car with a back seat....sort of.

I found one here in TN, If it's not to far for you do a search on statewidelist.com don't remember how much it was but it was more than that.

My m10 was the ultimate trooper 286k on her and still ran like a champ even after forgetting to shift out of first at an autocross and seeing the tach needle all the way past redline. (don't remember how high that was) Loved that engine but it would be nice to get it in a little newer package (e21 vs. e30)
