The 525it is very hard to find with a manual also. Maybe try to find a blown up engine or trans car to swap my stuff into.

Did you find it to be "big"? I normally drive a WRX or an MG Midget- I've had an M3, and am totally interested in an E39, but am afraid they'd be a little more big than was comfortable. This would be an all rounder- grocery getter, parking lot warrior, and commuter, so wondering not only if it drives big, but if it's easy to park etc. Don't need a tank when you're living in/around the city.

that is a shame, a really pretty e39 bit the dust.. but at least you are still around to find another.

Maybe buy it back for parts?

Yep, and the 540 only came with an auto box behind it. If you buy back the carcass, make sure you pull the front subframe, radiator, and steering rack along with the engine and transmission; this will allow you to swap into a 540 as well as an 525 or 528.

I've had 2 e36 BMWs, an e46 wagon, a 2002 WRX and am now in an e39 sedan. Of all those cars, I think the e39 is the best size. Not too big but a little roomier than the previous cars I've owned.

That's where they all went. You hardly ever see them elsewhere.

One manual car out of those and it is the non-sport version of my car.

I had a meeting to attend last night, so...
About 5 pm an hour drive on the turnpike and an hour back about 10 pm. You and your situation were in my thoughts. A few hits of standing water on the road and the feeling of the front 50 series tire coming off the pavement had me dialing back the speedometer on my e30 to under the speed limit of 70mph.
It was the kind of rain that required the fast speed of the wiper blades for much of the time.
I figured we did not need two wrecked in the same day.

It drives small, it was the perfect size.

WAS is the operative word, they totaled it and the adjuster thought $2K would be the buy back. Not sure it is worth that to me

What does the M52 sell for with maint records?

  • ansonivan

    Oct. 22, 2011 10:33 a.m. ansonivan Dork

M52tu with less than 100k should be worth 1000-1500 private party sale, less if you're in a hurry. Less if it's over 100k.

$2k buy back seems a little steep given the severity of the crash.

I agree, the car had 130K on it

That part I could never figure out. It's your car assuming it's paid off where the hell do they get off allowing you to buy it back? If I total one they'll have a hell of a time taking it anywhere but my property because it's my berkeleying car

  • jrw1621

    Oct. 22, 2011 6:42 p.m. jrw1621 SuperDork

    Nick, how about this explanation.
You own the car and it is agreed between you and the insurance co that it is worth $8,000 total value. If the insurance company writes you a check for the whole value of the car ($8,000) then they want the car. The Ins. Co. thinks that they can get $2,000 from a junkyard for the car making the remaining value of the car $2,000.
If you would like to keep the car then you will get a $6,000 check and a $2,000 heap of parts (the car) in your driveway which is a total of $8,000.

This difference of the big check and the small check with car is often called the "buy back" because if you do not buy it back then they will sell the remaining shell to a junkyard.

Bingo. I hate to scrap it but I'm not finding a decent shell in the right price range.

OK that makes sense. I just couldn't wrap my small mind around how they could make you pay for a car you already own. Having never had to deal with it (knock on wood). Sorry to hear about the car chandler.

Sorry to hear about the BMW but I love the Regal GS. Awesome motor and comfy ride.

  • chandlerGTi

    Oct. 23, 2011 1:04 p.m. chandlerGTi Reader

I can't wait to not be driving the GS. They feel so detached and the seats are the comfy leather that you can't get out of. Nice car but not my style. It can go back to third car status.

I found my exact car in green for a little more money, going to look after work Monday.

If you ever are selling the GS cheap keep me in mind. Good luck on the new BMW. A manual 5 series wagon is high on my want list.

  • chandlerGTi

    Oct. 29, 2011 12:06 p.m. chandlerGTi Reader

The GS won't ever be for sale. Its worth more as a third car than it is anywhere else due to the title.

I decided to look at Mazda5s as a replacement; I can't find another E39 touring that fits my criteria. The mazda5 seems to fit all of my expectations and I can get a pretty low mileage one for decent money
