regarding a "Emissions Exempt" 1984 BMW E28. In Georgia, anything older than model year 1986 is emissions exempt, so this particular car has no cat on it. Now that I have a job in Ohio (thank you to Maroon92 ), i will be taking this beast up there. Just want to prepare myself for cutting the test pipe off and putting a cat on.

Is there an "emissions exempt" category in Ohio?

Only certain areas have emissions testing. I have yet to see anyone carrying OH plates from southeastern OH needing emissions related crap to get a plate.

It varies from county to county in Ohio.

There probably is an emissions exemption for historic or collector cars and such.

I will have to do some more research. It would be Medina County

There are only 11 (eight?) counties in Ohio that have emissions testing.

In those counties, anything over 25 years old is exempt. Anything under 25 years old must be tested upon first registration, and every other year thereafter depending on model year. (So if you already own the car, the cutoff is effectively 24 years)

The pre-OBD-II test is a simple 25mph roller test, unless the vehicle is AWD, in which case it's a 2000rpm fast idle test, since the test stations do not have AWD dynos.

You'll like how cheap it is to register cars here. Two cars runs me roughly $165 annually - $55-58 per car, plus one has a personalized plate which is an additional $50/year. Fees are based on what county you live in, there's a state fee and an additional county fee. I live in one of the more expensive counties, some counties are as low as $40 per car.

Good to go! 25 years and older than the current emission year are exempt!

The joke is that you pretty much never see any cars over 25 years old, in the counties that do emissions testing

Buy a winter car you don't care about.

Ohio E-Check. We also have license and title bureau stores. You will need to have an out of state inspection. They compare vin # on car and title. Every thing can be done close to home.

I certainly hope so, even if it has to sleep in my garage.

I think the testing is only on the north coast, you shouldn't have to worry about anything in Medina. I'm about 20 minutes south and there is no testing.

welcome aboard the highway to hell. i live in this county.

ohio has a 25 year rolling exemption - dont worry.

medina county IS an e-check county since we are greater cleveland, and columbus screws us over royally and takes all our tax dollars to build their infrastructure.

my blazer failed a couple weeks ago, so i need to produce $300 in repairs to emissions equipment or register it as a commercial vehicle and pay 4x the registration.

Patgizz probably explained it for ya. My county is not an e-check.....yet. Welcome to Ohio. Enjoy the changing weather. Ever driven in snow? Oh yeah, any car you bring will start to rust soon. Really though, it's not a bad place to live.
