My lovely wife got me a parts cleaner for Christmas. This is a good thing, as I am incapable of bolting a dirty part to a car. I'm looking for suggestions on what cleaning fluid to use though. In the past, I've used mineral spirits, and have been very happy with the performance. That was in a shop though. This is in my basement. I'm looking for something with little to no stink.
Thoughts?
I use kerosene in mine. It is in the garage though.
low-odor mineral spirits? put it on wheels and only use it outdoors? that's all i got.
Safety Kleen makes what you want, but I don't know how much it costs.
Tractor Supply should have what you want.
Water and Dawn dish soap.
You don't want any real cleaner in the house. I ran a basin inside the house with a light dish soap mixture, it wasn't super awesome but was pretty decent as a degreaser.
A lot of shops use the "Purple Power" style cleaners. 5-gallon jugs at Autozone are 12 bucks.
Simple Green works pretty well if you use it straight - not as well as mineral spirits but it won't kill you or burn your house down either. You can dump it right down the drain when you are done.
Super Purple works better on steel but will ruin aluminum and pot metals finish. It also makes a mess out of your skin after a while if it gets past the gloves.
One of my shops uses straight water(hot!!), the other uses heated Simple Green(it's industrial stuff by another name, but essentially the same) and water in a 50/50 mix. I prefer the latter. The smell is docile when hot, and doesn't really smell like anything when cool.
