At least that WAS going to be my title until I realized the car has a blown head gasket and a serious case of the rod knocks. Trust me, no amount of Slick 50 is going to cover this up. Long story short a friend of mine is up dire creek and no way to afford fixing this car so the wife and I are giving her one of ours until a repair can be affected. I will be paying for and performing the entire repair until she can get back on her feet. I've been searching car-part.com for suitable replacement engines (1995 1.9l out of an escort) and about the best I can do is around $600 for something close that I might be able to pick up so that I don't have to pay shipping costs (southern new hampshire). Does this seem pretty reasonable to everybody? Mileage would be just under 80k with no warranty. Also the car needs an entire catback exhaust. As I am in no way going to be called a 'welder' any time soon, where can I get the best deal on an entire system? Is there anything I need to be especially aware of when swapping the engine into this wagon? It is a manual transmission. Thanks everybody!

I believe there is a difference between auto and manual engines. The Boy had an auto and a manual, and there were some parts that wouldn't interchange - coolant plumbing, IIRC.

It appears as if most of the plumbing stuff has already been replaced previously so that will most likely stay. As long as it bolts to the block I should be all set.

$600 seems high for one of those. I just sold one for $350 that sat on the shelf for literally 5 years. There is no difference between auto and manual, other than the flywheel and possibly some very minor stuff that can easily swap over. I think the last of that generation got a bad batch of rod bearings. I've fixed a few '96 models that started to knock by just putting new bearings in them. That being said, if it were me, I'd just pull one from the U-Pull for $100 and put a new head gasket and rod bearings in it before installing it.

Yah, I picked up a good used one for $200 from eBay.

I was just reading about NYC Escorts and Asian Escorts in another thread. I didn't see anything at all about Hot Escorts giving up head but I am subscribing to your thread.

Zx2s had hot and cool coupe models, but that is the only reference to temperature pertaining Escorts that I can think of.
The Escort engines are made to basically bolt up. Even a 2.0 could likely bolt straight in. Most Escort parts fit other escorts.
What year/model Escort is it and what year/size engine are you finding? (I know you mentioned the engine, but didn't see the current model info.)

For $600, couldn't you just get another Escort? Around here (ATL) you can get a whole one for that price...

This. I paid $700 for my EGT, and i overpaid.

Anyways OP... the title can still stay "hot escorts." Find yourself an EGT donor car. Swap in Mazda 1.8 DOHC goodness.
Up your budget from $600 a little, and you can have a Mazda 2.5 V6 screamer in there.

While that is a great idea you'll find that the selection in New Hampshire pales in comparison to ATL. The cars I'm finding here on CL are prime examples of why I want to move out of the snow belt...
I'd love to do a swap because I'm sure I can finagle her into selling the car to me at some point in the future but unfortunately price and time are conspiring against me at this point. I need something that will swap in both quickly and cheaply as the winter season is fast approaching.

The 1.9L CVH was essentially the same from the first gen 'scorts, the differences were mostly external (except the 1.9L HO/GT CVH) it was also available as a 2.0L with variable intake geometry. I don't know the engine codes though. A search on Wikipedia might provide some other models to broaden your search with.

The CVH was really popular overseas (due to the turbocharged models) and there were a couple of books written on the subject.

Keep in mind that a swap out of different engines may mean a different Ecu.

True, but if you use the block and head as the base with the stock external components, there is very little difference that the ECU cannot compensate for.

Funny, I saw a completely burned-to-the-ground 1st gen escort on a roll back on the way back from lunch. I tried but couldn't get a pic of it for this thread!
