There's a guy with an (ugly) track day three-wheeler in Southern California that's supposed to be very quick. I don't know which sanctioning body allows him, but Kurt Belinski speaks well of his setup.

Bottom line is that a three-wheeler can kick ass, but there have been so many E36 M3ty one's made that there's a lot of resistance to be overcome. It's kind of like coming to a formal party in torn and stained clothing. You have to overcome the fact that at first glance everyone thinks very poorly of you.

A so-called '300 kit' adapts sport bikes to fit a 300mm rear tire, usually adds a jackshaft and a wider/longer swingarm. That would be the simple (but expensive) solution to put some serious rubber out back. Of course, since the chassis would be custom, a wider swingarm and moving the engine a little to the side would do the trick.

I have no idea on handling, it just seems like a trike would be easier to register than a 4-wheel car. From a construction standpoint a locost with a bike engine would be just as easy, but would probably weigh 1-200lbs more.
