Anyone have suggestions?

I've heard some incredible audio using one of these, but i'm not sure how easily mountable it is, if that makes sense. Doesn't seem to be a good way to mount it directly to the camera.

Looking for a good balance of ease of use, sound quality, and price. Suggestions?

I use the mic linked below with a foam cover for a vocal mic sowed over it to block wind noise. Last track day I mounted it above my license plate and got some good sounds. I don't have any videos posted yet. I used a condenser mic before this one and it worked well but you couldn't tell if the batteries we're dead until you watched the video and had crappy sound. This one doesn't use batteries so one less thing to worry about.

I bought one on Amazon early on after the first event when all I heard was "whooooooooooooshhhhhh" when mounted outside. I have yet to actually mount/test the damn thing. This will remind me to try it & give the link if it works. (Someone else had recommended it here, so there's that.)

This interests me. I was just going to run a long cable from the GoPro in the front to the back of the car near the exhaust, but I still have not done it and I forget to bring or charge my Gopro to half of the events I drive in.

Here is my previous thread: https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/off-topic-discussion/getting-exhaustengine-good-sound-with-gopro/72769/page1/

I drilled the case for my GoPro Hero 2 to plug in an external audio connection and tried it out with a long calibration cable microphone from a piece of audio equipment for my Home theater subwoofer system...this is the result:

FRS exhaust

How it was mounted:

I'm sure a better quality/range microphone with a windsock would be more ideal.

You don't mention what version of GoPro you have. The Hero 3 requires an adapter for the microphone. The 'el-cheapo $5.00 adapters do not work and I ended up buying an adapter directly from GoPro.

Anyway once I had the adapter issue sorted out I tried out several microphones for a good exhaust sound. The Sony DS70p get the job done but will need a deadcat (cover). The cheapish microphones also do a decent job.

Its good to have at least a 6 foot extension cable so you can place the camera in different locations and still have the mic in the same place.

Gluing some kind of foam over the open-back piece will kill the constant whooooshing.

I have a Hero3 Silver.

I'm cool with buying a GoPro adapter if i have to.

I'm not necessarily trying to decrease extra noise so much as i'm trying to get audio that doesn't sound "thin" or "tinny."

Another Audio-Technica PRO24CM video for you, I remembered seeing this one when looking into mics for Go-Pro a while back and found it again:

Tinny, you say?

That's the exact microphone I have, and I'm not super impressed by it. It puts out a very low volume signal, meaning that you need to run it through some audio equalization when rendering the video, which is kind of a PITA. The foam covering also doesn't do a particularly good job of killing wind noise.

With the mic mounted behind the passenger seat, inside the cabin, it sounds like this:

Here is a lap of Atlanta Motorsports Park with the setup I listed in post 2.

That's pretty good, I gotta say.

tomtomgt356, so you are using just a regular cable extension between the mic and Go-Pro? Sounds great to me... been wondering about that one actually (I know Olympus makes great products), and for that price not bad at all!

In reply to Vracer111:

I have the gopro mic adaptor and a 12' headphone extension cable. Nothing special. The 12' cable allows me to run from the top of the windshield to the back of the car and tuck the cable into the door seal/molding so it is not dangling or in the way.

Never did get to test it. Surprise. But here's the link from when I bought it:
