Have you checked out the Model T GT in the current issue of Hot Rod? It might give you some bad ideas ...

The mailman pilfered my copy. I'm waiting for my neighbor to finish his.

I toyed with the idea of building my own chassis to go under a beetle body. I think that's too much work.

I am afraid of the learning curve of trying out another chassis. At this point we're just thinking out loud.

    Porsche 924S/944?

A great chassis that respond well to V8 swaps. Stock engines blow up when the timing belts go "ping" and the Audi 5-speed transaxle survives a good amount of abuse (See Lambo/GT40 mid-engined replicas), clutch splines on the Audi units are Chrysler/Ford splines.

Early 924's share 4-bolt pattern with early mustangs, but use odd clutch splines. Parts are readily mixed and matched, but just be aware if you go looking. Early cars (1977-1979) weight the least and can get down to 2300lbs with lightweight panels and standard weight removal work.

GPS nailed it. Just skin and cage your current ride or find something you like better to skin and cage. You'll get down to target weight in no time. Hell, the guy who runs a Lincoln MkVIII in Lemons has so much cut off of it you can't even recognize it. Fast as hell too.

Ooh a B210 would be awesome. 924 / 44 would be interesting except people would expect it to be fast. Not necessarily the end of the world, but...

I could start cutting on the wagon. There isn't a lot of weight to get out of it at this point and it'd cause me pain to un-wagon it.

No, actually they expect them to be slow.

The base 924 is slooooooow out of the box. 95hp pushing 2300-2400lbs doesn't equate to high speed. They handle well enough to not slow down much for the corners (the stock brakes mean they won't slow down much anyway, heh)

The 944 and 924S are a bit faster with 150/160hp but they weigh a little more with all of the extra luxuries added over the years, even after the luxuries are removed. They do come with better brakes and they tend to out-brake and out-handle a lot of cars pretty easily.

Most don't survive the abuse a Citrus or Chump race provide since the engines or fuel systems are usually on their way out on examples bought for $500 :)

Fix the engine issue and you'll one step closer to podium.

Or you could do a Toyota Supra:

An MG Midget? (Someone stuffed a 426 Hemi in one and made it a DD for many years)

Thunderbird? (probably not any lighter than the wagon?)

TR4 / 6 - I know basically nothing about British roadsters. There's a pile of derelict MGs near the shop. A sunbeam would have historical significance. To my ignorant brain they're all the same. Which would be best?

It is going to be damn hard to find a TR4 or TR6 for Lemons money. I would suggest a TR7 anyway. The TR7 while not loved at all has a better suspension then the others. An MGB should be easy to find. Both were available from the factory with V8 versions.
